Letterform anatomy

How to read serif letterforms.

Three checks worth running on any specimen before you compare prices.

The serif family tree is easiest to read through contrast. Old-style faces keep a modest thick-to-thin ratio and angled stress, transitional faces push the contrast higher, and modern or Didone faces take it to hairlines so thin they almost vanish. Bracket shape follows the same logic: soft brackets read classic, sharp unbracketed serifs read modern and slightly severe.

Production reality

Where these faces fail.

High-contrast serifs are print faces. The hairlines that make them elegant are the first thing to disappear on vinyl, and they break during weeding at any size below two inches. Keep them for stationery, editorial layouts and laser engraving where a fine line is an asset.

Which serif works best as a wedding companion font?

A moderate-contrast serif with open counters. It contrasts with the script without competing, holds small caps dates and addresses clearly at eight to ten points, and survives both letterpress-style printing and flat foil.

Is a serif font safe for cutting?

Usually only the lower-contrast ones. Old-style and slab-leaning serifs cut cleanly because their stems and serifs share a similar weight, while modern Didone serifs and hairline revivals are best reserved for print, engraving or large-scale signage.
