Brush script paired with textured display

Naughty Holiday

Naughty Holiday is a festive pair: a hand-painted red brush script with a fat entry swash, set above a distressed white display in heavy caps, with a thin italic script and a tracked credit line beneath, so the sheet shows two faces working as a headline and a counterweight.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Naughty Holiday.

The script is painted rather than drawn: the strokes swell and thin as a loaded brush would, the entry swash on the first letter runs a long way to the left, and the terminals taper into points. Under it, the display is a condensed grotesque that has been weathered, with chips along the edges and speckles inside the strokes, and the two faces contrast hard, which is the point of the pairing. The specimen layers them tightly so the script overlaps the display's top line, a device that only works because both are heavy. Snowflake ornaments and a photo of a dark interior with a tree sit behind the lockup, and the two small lines at the foot, an italic script and a tracked sans, explain what a buyer is getting without adding a third voice to the design.

Practical applications

Project & layout

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Naughty Holiday’s stroke geometry.

Christmas

Poster for a shop's festive window

A painted script over a weathered display gives a seasonal window the handmade feel of a chalked sign, and the contrast between the two faces does the work that a second decoration would otherwise have to do.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A2 portrait: the script at 90 mm cap height, the display beneath at 110 mm, the opening hours in a 16 mm sans at the foot. Keep the overlap to 6 mm so the script stays readable and print red, white and one dark ground on a matte stock.

Pre-production check

Check the overlap at full size, where the script's tail can cut into the display's counters; keep 10 mm of clear space under the swash. Confirm the 16 mm hours read at three metres and that the weathered chips do not close the display's counters.

Valentine

Card for a December gift range

A brush script brings a handmade warmth to a seasonal card, and the weathered display underneath keeps the phrase from looking like a wedding invitation in the wrong season.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A6 card: the script at 30 pt, the display at 26 pt, the price in a 9 pt sans. Keep 12 mm margins and print on a cream card so the red script reads as paint rather than as ink.

Pre-production check

Check the 30 pt script on the card, where the swash can run into the trim; pull the lockup 5 mm to the right. Confirm the 9 pt price keeps a 4.5:1 contrast and that the two faces still contrast at half size on a phone screen.

Editorial & posters

Cover for a winter catalogue

A script and a weathered display give a catalogue a seasonal cover that reads as a handmade shop rather than as a corporate mailer, which is exactly the tone a small retailer needs.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A4 cover: the script at 60 pt, the display at 70 pt, the issue line in a 10 pt sans, and a 5 mm rule. Keep the lockup in the upper half and leave the lower half for one photograph.

Pre-production check

Check the cover at 60 pt on the press, where the script's thin joins can break; print at 300 dpi and proof. Confirm the 10 pt issue line reads at arm's length and that the lockup holds at thumbnail size in an email.
