Visual anatomy & craft review
Grunge Retro is a wide geometric display sans in caps with softly radiused corners and a light, evenly distributed speckle wear that sits across the face rather than in patches. The geometry is clean underneath, so the distress reads as age on a painted sign rather than as a broken file, and the wide stance fills a panel with one short word. It needs roughly 30 mm for the speckle to read as wear instead of dirt, and it is best in a warm black on sandstone, or as one ink on kraft.

Aged geometric caps read as a sign that has hung outside a café for years, which is the story a small roaster is selling. The light speckle prints cleanly in one ink on kraft, and the wide stance makes a short roast name fill a 70 mm bag label without help.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Sign 900 x 400 mm, word 180 mm, 60 mm margins and 25 mm frame clearance. Bag label 90 x 140 mm, name 30 mm, origin 7/10 pt, 10 mm margins. Menu board 900 x 600 mm, header 80 mm, rows 22 mm on a 32 mm pitch.
Pre-production check
The speckle wear at 30 mm on a kraft bag prints as random grey dots and the name looks dirty rather than vintage. Use the smooth weight under 40 mm and keep the distressed build for signage, checking one printed bag before the run.
Aged caps read as an award that has been earned rather than bought, which suits a long-service thank-you. The wide geometry holds a full name plus a year inside a 200 mm plaque and the wear keeps it from looking like a corporate certificate.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Plaque 200 x 150 mm, name 26 mm, year 12 mm, 15 mm margins and 8 mm engraved margin. Card 148 x 105 mm, heading 14 mm, message 7/10 pt. Banner 1500 x 400 mm, word 240 mm, 100 mm margins with eyelets every 500 mm.
Pre-production check
An engraved plaque cuts the speckle as separate pits and the face reads as a solid cap with pinholes. Specify the smooth weight for engraving, and inspect one plate before the order.
Worn geometric letterforms read as a seasonal bill painted on a board, which is what a farm stand posts in October. The wide stance carries a single word at poster scale in one ink, and the wear gives the poster a printed-once texture without a photograph.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Poster A2, word 280 mm, items 22/28 pt, 30 mm margins and 20 mm trim. Sign 600 x 400 mm, word 120 mm, 40 mm margins. Label 70 x 95 mm, word 16 mm, 5 mm top arc and 4 mm die margin.
Pre-production check
A poster printed on uncoated stock shows the speckle as uneven grey and the word looks faded at 280 mm. Print on 150 gsm coated or add a 10 percent dot gain allowance, and check one poster pulled before the batch.
