Letterform structure
of Blackletter.
Blackletter is, despite the name, a clean condensed handwritten rounded sans: narrow upright stems with fully rounded ends, an even medium stroke, wide spacing and no gothic breaks at all. The name is misleading and the face is a quiet everyday heading cut, and the rounded ends are the only warmth. It needs roughly 20 mm for the rounded end and the counter to read, and it is best in one dark ink on white, or a single colour on a pale ground.

Header 22 pt with 6 mm counter clearance, standfirst 11/15 pt, body 9/13 pt over two columns of 82 mm, 18 mm margins and a 12 mm head. Caption 8/11 pt.
Pre-production check
At 8 pt the caption's rounded counters close and the line reads as a grey band. Set captions in the body face and keep the display at 18 pt and above, then proof one page at 1:1.

Pre-production check
On a 200 x 40 mm band the word crosses the fold and splits when wrapped. Keep it 8 mm clear of the crease, and wrap one band before the order.

A narrow rounded sans fits a whole timetable in a small box and reads on a wall. The stroke holds at 16 mm in a header, and one ink prints the sheets and the display in one pass.

Planner sheet A4, header 16 mm with 4 mm counter clearance, boxes 60 x 40 mm, 12 mm margins. Classroom label 105 x 40 mm, word 14 mm, 4 mm margins. Display 1200 x 400 mm, letters 160 mm, 20 mm margins.
Pre-production check
At 14 mm on a label the rounded ends touch and the word reads as one long bar after a term of handling. Raise labels to 20 mm and laminate them, and print one sheet before the class set.
