of Fox Journal.

Fox Journal is a clean hand-drawn serif with crisp slab feet, open bowls and a friendly single-storey a, so a line reads as a page from a well-kept notebook rather than as a typeset book. The strokes are even and only lightly modulated, which makes the face hold at small sizes and print cleanly on uncoated stock, while the drawn edges keep it from looking mechanical. It needs roughly 14 pt for the slab feet to read as slabs, and it is at its best in dark espresso or sepia on warm paper.

Pre-production check

A photocopied zine at 80 percent reduction erodes a hand-drawn slab foot into a serif smudge and the text looks dirty. Print at 100 percent or above, and check one reduced spread before the run.

Harvest journal cover, recipe-card set and market label

Warm notebook letterforms read as a handmade farm journal, which is what a smallholder sells at an autumn market. The face carries long ingredient lists at 8 pt and looks right printed in sepia on kraft, where a high-contrast serif would disappear.

Pre-production check

Kraft card is absorbent and a slab foot at 8 pt fills into a dark line on the recipe card. Use 120 gsm minimum and a heavier ink hold, or move the steps onto a white insert, checking one card printed before the set.

Reading-log cover, worksheet header and library sign

Friendly journal letterforms read as a school handout that a child will actually keep, which is what a library reading scheme needs. The single-storey a and open bowls are the shapes early readers are taught, so the header supports the worksheet instead of decorating it.
