Visual anatomy & craft review
Dreary is a tall airy monoline pen print with narrow uppercase, rounded long-stemmed lowercase and a light even weight, so a line reads as careful printing with a fine pen rather than as handwriting with a brush. The generous spacing keeps it legible at 9 pt, which is unusual for a hand-drawn face, and the long stems set its vertical rhythm. It needs roughly 14 pt for the stems to read as deliberate, and it is best in chalk white on deep spruce or in one dark ink on cream.

Neat pen printing matches the letterforms children are taught, which is what a reading worksheet needs on the page. The even weight survives a photocopier at 10 pt, and the generous spacing keeps the words from running together for a beginner.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Worksheet A4, header 22 pt, body 11/15 pt, ruled lines 8 mm apart, 20 mm margins. Card 105 x 148 mm, word 18 mm, lines 9 mm apart. Notice A4, header 24 pt, body 11/15 pt.
Pre-production check
A school copier at 300 dpi renders a 0.3 mm monoline as a dotted line and the worksheet looks damaged. Print from vector PDF at 600 dpi, and check one copy on the classroom machine.
Fine pen printing reads as a manuscript rather than typeset text, which is what a poetry page wants. The airy spacing holds a narrow column at 9.5 pt, and the long stems give the page a quiet rhythm that a roman face cannot.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Page 148 x 210 mm, poem 11/17 pt in a 70 mm column, opener 40 pt, 15 mm margins. Opener 420 x 297 mm, headline 90 mm, body 9.5/14 pt. Zine 105 x 148 mm, body 9/13 pt.
Pre-production check
A 70 mm column at 11 pt in a hand-drawn face runs long and the line breaks fall badly mid-phrase. Keep the column at 60 mm or widen the leading, and check one printed poem page before the run.
Fine pen lettering reads as a label written out for a market, which is what an autumn craft stand needs. The even stroke prints in one ink on kraft, and the tall narrow forms fit a long product name on a 60 mm jar label.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Sign 600 x 400 mm, word 110 mm, 40 mm margins. Price card 148 x 105 mm, item 18 mm, price 14 mm, 12 mm margins. Label 60 x 90 mm, word 12 mm, 4 mm die margin.
Pre-production check
A 60 mm jar label printed in a fine monoline on kraft wicks and the name spreads into grey. Print on a coated label or raise the word to 16 mm, and check one applied label on a filled jar.
