Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Cake and Bakery.

Cake and Bakery is a piped-icing display drawn from nineteen-seventies pastry decoration: each letter is a rope of icing with a soft raised edge, a slight sag between the letters and a scalloped terminal, in full caps, lower case, figures and symbols. The rope shading suggests height, so a word needs size to look piped rather than drawn. It needs roughly 30 mm for the rope edge and the scallop to read, and it is best in one soft colour on cream, or a two-colour build where the icing highlight is bare paper.

Practical applications

Project & layout

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Cake and Bakery’s stroke geometry.

Brand & packaging

Bakery identity, cake box and piping-card print

A piped-icing display is the medium a bakery already works in, so a box in it looks decorated by hand rather than printed. The rope edge gives the shop name texture at 30 mm on a lid, and one soft ink prints the box, the card and the cake board in a single order.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Cake box lid 250 x 250 mm, word 40 mm with 8 mm rope clearance, 20 mm margins. Card 85 x 55 mm, word 16 mm, 5 mm margins. Cake board 300 mm round, word 60 mm, 25 mm margins.

Pre-production check

On a cake board printed at 60 mm the icing rope at 30 mm carries fine highlight lines that fill with grease from the cake. Use a grease-resistant board or print the word as a flat silhouette, and check one board under a real cake before the batch.

Birthday

Birthday card, cake topper and cupcake ring

A piped-icing face reads as a decorated cake rather than a printed invitation, which is exactly the theme a birthday card is announcing. The scalloped terminals give the greeting charm at 36 mm, and one ink plus bare paper for the highlight prints the card and the rings from one file.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Card A6, greeting 36 mm with 8 mm rope clearance, note 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Topper 120 x 100 mm, word 40 mm with a 6 mm stick slot and 12 mm clear. Cupcake ring 70 mm diameter, word 10 mm, 4 mm die margin.

Pre-production check

A 70 mm cupcake ring at 10 mm compresses the rope edge into a dotted line and the word looks printed badly. Keep rings at 14 mm or print an initial only, and test one ring on a real cupcake first.

Classroom & school

Bake-sale poster, price card and tray label

A piped-icing face is the alphabet a bake sale is selling, so a poster in it looks made by the bakers rather than bought. The soft rope holds at 60 mm on a corridor wall, and one ink prints the poster, the price cards and the tray labels in a single pass.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Poster A3, headline 70 mm with 10 mm rope clearance, details 24 mm, 15 mm margins. Price card 105 x 75 mm, item 16 mm, price 24 mm. Tray label 120 x 60 mm, word 20 mm, 5 mm margins.

Pre-production check

A 105 x 75 mm price card at 16 mm sags the rope into a solid stroke and the item name greys under lamination. Raise the item to 20 mm, and laminate one card before the set.
