Visual anatomy & craft review
Old Game is an eight-bit pixel display drawn on the 1983 console grid: every letter is built from square pixels on a fixed lattice, the curves are stepped rather than smooth, and a shadow or outline variant doubles each pixel block. The lattice means the face only works at whole multiples of its pixel size, so any in-between scale produces uneven pixels. It needs roughly 24 mm for the stepped curve to read, and it is best in four colours or one ink on a dark screen-like ground, never anti-aliased.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Old Game’s stroke geometry.
An eight-bit lattice reads as a console screen rather than a modern party font, which is what a nineties-themed birthday wants at the door. The stepped curves hold at 36 mm on an invite, and one bright ink on black prints the invite, the topper and the wrap as a single set.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Invite A6, word 36 mm on a whole-pixel scale, details 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Topper 120 x 100 mm, word 40 mm with a 6 mm stick slot and 12 mm clear. Cup wrap 200 x 90 mm, word 20 mm, 12 mm from the rim.
Pre-production check
Scaled to 36 mm the pixel blocks land at 1.7 mm and the stepped curve prints with uneven edges that look like a broken file. Scale in whole multiples of the pixel or use the native size, and check one printed invite with a loupe.
A pixel display gives a thank-you note the charm of an old title screen, which suits a shop that sells retro games. The stepped forms print at 20 mm on a small card, and one ink plus a knocked-out pixel shadow prints the card and the sticker from the same artwork.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Card A6, word 20 mm on a whole-pixel scale, note 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Sticker 60 x 60 mm, word 16 mm, 4 mm die margin to the pixel edge. Pin card 70 x 100 mm, word 18 mm, 6 mm margins and 14 mm clear under the pin hole.
Pre-production check
A 60 x 60 mm die-cut sticker at 16 mm leaves a 0.8 mm pixel island at the corner of a letter and the blade tears it. Keep the word 12 mm and above at whole-pixel scale, and weed one sheet before the batch.
A pixel display reads as a screenshot rather than a styled headline, which is exactly what a feature about early console design wants. The lattice gives the title the same grain as the captures on the page, and the stepped edges align to a pixel grid so captions can sit flush underneath.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Opener 210 x 297 mm, title 48 pt on a whole-pixel scale, standfirst 11/15 pt, body 9/13 pt, 18 mm margins. Captions 8/11 pt. Tab 30 x 90 mm, word 8 mm.
Pre-production check
At 8 mm on the tab the pixel lattice drops below its native block size and the caption icon reads as noise. Keep the face to the opener and screenshot captions at 10 pt, and proof one page at 1:1.
