Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Folclorica Typewriter.

Folclorica Typewriter is a slab serif drawn for body text and textured like an archival typewriter with a faded strike: even slabbed stems, open counters, a level baseline and a surface where the ink coverage varies so some letters print lighter than their neighbours. The faded strike is the design, so a long paragraph reads as a carbon copy, and the texture silts at small sizes. It needs roughly 18 mm for the fade and the slab to read, and it is best in one dense black on uncoated stock, or a single ink at 60 percent where the fade prints as intentional.

Editorial & posters

Archive-feature body, standfirst and caption

A faded typewriter slab sets a long archive feature as a carbon copy rather than a modern body face. The counters stay open at 9 pt, and the uneven strike gives a page the texture of a document without a scan.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Body 9/13 pt in two columns of 82 mm with 18 mm margins, 5 mm gutter and a 12 mm head. Standfirst 11/15 pt with 4 mm below. Caption 8/11 pt in a 40 mm outer-margin rail, 4 mm below the image. Header 24 pt with 6 mm slab clearance.

Pre-production check

At 9 pt over a full page the faded strike silts into grey and the gaps between words close. Raise the body to 9.5 pt or run one column, and proof one signature at 1:1.

Autumn

Harvest-fair programme, ticket and prize label

A typewriter slab gives a country fair a printed programme rather than a designed flyer. The slabs hold at 12 pt through a long schedule, and one ink prints the programme and the tickets in one order.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Programme 105 x 148 mm, head 18 pt, schedule 9/12 pt, 12 mm margins. Ticket 100 x 50 mm, word 12 mm with 6 mm slab clearance, 4 mm perforation. Prize label 90 x 60 mm, word 16 mm, 5 mm margins.

Pre-production check

A 100 x 50 mm ticket at 12 mm closes the faded strike into a solid bar and the word reads as a stamp. Raise the ticket to 18 mm, and print one ticket before the batch.

Classroom & school

School-paper body, masthead and notice

A typewriter slab reads as a duplicated school paper rather than a worksheet, which is what a journalism class wants on its pages. The slabs hold at 9 pt through dense columns, and one ink prints the paper and the notices in one pass.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Paper 210 x 297 mm, masthead 40 mm with 6 mm slab clearance, body 9/12 pt in three columns of 56 mm, 15 mm margins. Notice 210 x 297 mm, head 24 mm, items 9/12 pt.

Pre-production check

At 9 pt in three columns the faded strike makes the rules and the text the same weight and the page reads as a grey field. Drop to two columns at 9.5 pt, and check one copy before the class set.
