Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Fadero.

Fadero is a Tuscan display serif in which the stems carry a medial spur, the caps are ornamented with split serifs and small ball terminals, and the weight sits between bold and fat face. The ornament lives on the silhouette, so the word box grows in both directions, and the hollow centre on some capitals fills first in small sizes. It needs roughly 32 mm for the spur and the split serif to read, and it is best in one deep ink on cream or warm sand, and it should never be reversed below 24 mm.

Autumn

Harvest-fair poster, tent sign and prize card

A Tuscan with spurs and split serifs reads as a printed fair bill from a hundred years ago, which is exactly what an autumn fair wants at its gate. The fat stems hold at 110 mm across a poster, and one deep ink on a warm sheet prints the poster, the tent sign and the prize cards from a single order.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Poster A2, word 130 mm with 14 mm spur clearance, details 34 mm, 20 mm margins. Tent sign 600 x 400 mm, word 90 mm, 25 mm margins. Prize card 100 x 70 mm, word 20 mm, 6 mm margins.

Pre-production check

On a 100 x 70 mm prize card at 20 mm the hollow centre stroke closes and the word reads as a solid plate. Keep cards at 26 mm, and print one card before the batch.

Brand & packaging

Brewery identity, bottle neck label and tap badge

A spurred Tuscan reads as a Victorian brewery mark rather than a modern craft logo, which is what a historic taproom wants on its badge. The split serifs give the name ornament at 24 mm on a neck label, and one dark ink on a light ground keeps the hollow stems open where reversal would close them.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Neck label 60 x 40 mm, word 14 mm, 4 mm margins to the die. Tap badge 75 mm round, word 20 mm, 5 mm die margin and 6 mm clear of the clip. Pump clip 100 x 60 mm, word 24 mm, 6 mm margins. Coaster 95 mm round, word 14 mm, 5 mm die margin.

Pre-production check

A 60 x 40 mm neck label at 14 mm closes the split serif into a blob and the beer becomes hard to identify from the fridge shelf. Raise the neck word to 18 mm or print a plain shield, and check one bottle in the fridge before the order.

Editorial & posters

History-feature opener, pull quote and folio ornament

A Tuscan display reads as a nineteenth-century handbill, which is what a history feature about trade or advertising wants at the opener. The spurs give the title period weight at 64 pt, and the split serif survives a single-ink print on uncoated text stock where a hairline face would vanish.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Opener 210 x 297 mm, title 64 pt with 10 mm spur clearance, standfirst 11/15 pt, body 9/13 pt in two columns, 18 mm margins. Pull quote 40 pt. Folio ornament 12 mm.

Pre-production check

At 40 pt on the pull quote the split serif fills with ink and the quote reads as a fat bar rather than ornamented type. Keep the face at 48 pt and above, set the pull quote in the body serif, and proof one spread at 1:1.
