Visual anatomy & craft review
Agondav is a Victorian display serif in which the stems split into bifurcated Tuscan forms, with waist notches and curled terminals on the A and V, so a word reads as carved signage from a nineteenth-century shopfront. The construction is tall and narrow with a strong vertical axis, and the split stems mean the face needs size — roughly 25 mm — before the bifurcation reads as intentional rather than as a printing fault. It is a headline and label face, tight-spaced and all but unusable in long copy.

Split Tuscan stems are the historical vocabulary of an old shopfront sign, which gives a heritage brand provenance without a texture overlay. The narrow proportions fit a tall bottle label.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Label 70 x 110 mm, name 18 mm, data 5/7 pt, 5 mm top arc clearance and 4 mm from the die edge. Bottle 80 x 120 mm, name 20 mm, abv 4.5 pt on a 6 mm baseline. Stamp 45 x 25 mm, word 7 mm, 2 mm relief border.
Pre-production check
Split stems close when a label is printed at 18 mm on uncoated stock and the letter reads as a solid bar. Print a 1:1 proof, and if the bifurcation fills, raise the name to 22 mm or move to a coated label.
Bifurcated capitals are the correct reference for a nineteenth-century poster, so a reproduction reads as source rather than pastiche. Narrow stems stack a long title in a single column.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Poster 500 x 700 mm, title 200 mm, imprint 16/22 pt, 40 mm margins. Cover 129 x 198 mm, title 34 pt, author 14 pt, 15 mm margins. Label 100 x 60 mm, object 8 mm, data 6 pt.
Pre-production check
Museum labels are printed at 8 mm and read at 40 cm, where a split stem becomes two thin lines that shimmer. Keep the display face on the poster and the label in a plain serif, and check one label at its stated viewing distance.
Tuscan display letters read as a reprinted Victorian card rather than a modern festive graphic, which is what a heritage brand wants. Tight spacing gives the card a period density.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Card 120 x 170 mm, greeting 24 mm, message 8/12 pt, 14 mm margins. Wrap repeat 500 x 700 mm, motif 60 mm on a 120 mm grid. Menu 148 x 210 mm, header 24 mm, courses 9/13 pt.
Pre-production check
Gift wrap repeats are printed on thin paper that stretches on the roll, and a tight-set display word can misregister between colours. Keep the motif to one ink, and check one printed roll section before the run.
