Visual anatomy & craft review
Collection is a condensed grotesk drawn from nineteen-seventies athletic and editorial lettering: narrow stems, flat shoulders, a tall x-height, a slightly squared bowl and a small flare where a stem meets the curve. It ships with PUA alternates as OTF and TTF, and the alternates mostly change the flare rather than the skeleton. It needs roughly 20 mm for the flare and the squared bowl to read, and it is best in one dark ink on white or on a warm sand stock, where the narrow stems stay crisp.

A seventies condensed grotesk reads as a sports label from a catalogue rather than a modern fitness brand, which is what a small maker of kit wants. The narrow stems fit a long product name on a swing tag at 14 mm, and one ink prints the tag and the kit print without a second plate.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Swing tag 50 x 90 mm, word 14 mm, 5 mm margins with a 4 mm hole and 8 mm clear. Kit print 250 x 200 mm, word 60 mm, 20 mm margins. Card 85 x 55 mm, word 14 mm, 5 mm margins.
Pre-production check
On a 50 x 90 mm swing tag at 14 mm the squared bowl fills and the product name greys out beside the price. Keep tags at 16 mm and above, and print one tag on the actual board before the batch.
A condensed grotesk from the seventies gives a sports feature a printed-programme voice rather than a screen voice. The tall x-height holds a results table at 8 pt with tight leading, and the narrow stems keep a long fixture list inside one column without tracking out.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Opener 210 x 297 mm, headline 64 pt, standfirst 11/15 pt, 18 mm margins. Results table 90 mm wide, rows 8/10 pt, rules 0.4 mm. Kicker 10 pt small caps.
Pre-production check
At 8 pt in the results table the flare at the stem junction closes and the figures read as a grey band in a dense column. Keep tables at 9 pt or above, and proof one page at 1:1 before the run.
A seventies condensed grotesk is the lettering a summer league already prints on its schedules, so a card in it looks official rather than homemade. The narrow stems fit a full fixture list on one A5 card, and one ink prints the card and the field sign from the same separation.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Schedule card 148 x 210 mm, header 30 mm, fixtures 9 mm, 12 mm margins. Field sign 900 x 600 mm, word 120 mm, 25 mm margins. Shirt back 300 x 400 mm, word 90 mm, 20 mm margins.
Pre-production check
On a 148 x 210 mm schedule at 9 mm the condensed figures print with clogged counters on an office laser and the dates become unreadable. Raise fixtures to 10 mm or set the dates in a wider companion, and print one card on the actual printer.
