Chunky pixel display with colour blocks

Pixel Friendship

Pixel Friendship is a chunky pixel display in multicolour: every capital is a solid block of one colour with stepped pixel corners, a darker shadow block offset behind it, and mixed letter heights, so the words read as an old arcade title screen.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Pixel Friendship.

The specimen sets three lines at large size, and each letter is a solid colour with a stepped silhouette: the corners lose a pixel, the curves are staircases two blocks wide, and the counters are one block across, which keeps the face readable at distance. Each letter carries a darker shadow block offset down and right, which gives the word depth without a gradient, and the colours change letter by letter, which is the point of the specimen rather than a property of the typeface. Because the blocks are large, the face reads at poster size and would fail below about 30 pt, which the sample respects by setting everything large. The ground is a pastel printed texture, and no other type appears on the page, so the specimen is entirely about the colour blocks.

Practical applications

Project & layout
blueprints.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Pixel Friendship’s stroke geometry.

Birthday

Invitation for a games party

A pixel display sets a gaming theme in two words, and the large blocks read on a small invitation where a finer bitmap face would blur.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A6 card: the phrase at 34 pt, the details in a 9 pt rounded sans, and a shadow offset of one block. Keep the palette to four colours on a pale ground so a home printer reproduces the blocks cleanly.

Pre-production check

Check the 34 pt phrase on a home printer, where a stepped corner can smear; keep the module at a whole pixel. Confirm the 9 pt details keep a 4.5:1 contrast and that the colour changes do not obscure the word.

Classroom & school

Banner for a coding club fair

A pixel face signals technology to students without a circuit-board cliché, and the block construction reads from across a hall where fine detail would be lost.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print 1,000 by 500 mm: the club name at 150 mm cap height, the times in a 30 mm rounded sans, and a one-block shadow. Keep the module large enough that the staircases stay sharp at the printer's resolution.

Pre-production check

Check the banner at full size, where uneven blocks can look like a rendering error; keep the module consistent. Confirm the 30 mm times read from six metres and that the shadow does not touch the letter beneath it.

Brand & packaging

Label for a retro game shop

A pixel mark gives a game shop a digital identity that still reads on a small sticker, and the flat colours keep the print cheap.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Die-cut a 60 mm sticker: the brand at 16 pt with a one-block shadow, the tagline in a 6 pt sans, and a 2 mm border to the die line. Keep the module at least 2 mm so the blocks stay visible after cutting.

Pre-production check

Check the 60 mm sticker, where a small counter can close; increase the module for that size. Confirm the die line clears the shadow by 2 mm and that the sticker reads on both light and dark surfaces.
