Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Old Military Stencil.

Old Military Stencil is a heavy stencil sans with classic army bridge cuts, squared terminals and a gritty field-worn paint texture scattered across the strokes. The bridges are wide and deliberate, which means the letter reads as sprayed through a cut board rather than as a printed face, and the wear sits on the stroke so it survives at banner scale. It needs roughly 35 mm for the bridges and the texture to hold, and it is best in matte black on olive drab or in one ink on kraft.

Thank you

Veteran plaque, unit reunion card and challenge coin insert

Field-stencilled caps read as an official unit mark, which is what a reunion or a veteran thank-you is imitating. The bridge cuts let the word be sprayed as well as printed, and the squared terminals hold on an engraved plate at 9 mm where a rounded face would clog.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Plaque 250 x 180 mm, word 30 mm, dates 10 mm, 20 mm margins and 8 mm engraved margin. Card 148 x 105 mm, heading 14 mm, message 7/10 pt. Insert 90 x 60 mm, word 12 mm, 4 mm margins.

Pre-production check

An engraved plate cuts a 2 mm bridge as two separate grooves and the letter falls apart into two islands. Widen the bridge to 3 mm on the engraving file, and inspect one plate before the order is placed.

Brand & packaging

Ammo-crate carton, tool-chest label and workwear print

Stencil caps read as a crate marking rather than a brand logo, which is what a tool or outdoor brand wants on packaging. The face is designed to be sprayed, so the same artwork works on a carton, a steel chest and a work jacket, and the texture covers the cost of a cheap one-colour print.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Carton 300 x 200 x 150 mm, word 60 mm on the side, 30 mm margins. Chest label 120 x 40 mm, word 12 mm, 3 mm die margin. Workwear print 240 x 100 mm, word 40 mm, 40 mm margins.

Pre-production check

Spray paint over a stencil bleeds under the mask on a rough-sawn crate and the bridges disappear into a fuzzy edge. Seal the timber first or use a printed label, and spray one crate before the production run.

Editorial & posters

Military-history cover, map spread and exhibition panel

Stencilled crate lettering reads as a period artefact, which is what a military-history title uses instead of a decorative serif. The bridges and wear give a cover its subject without a photograph, and the squared forms hold in a two-colour offset run.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Cover 152 x 229 mm, title 54 pt, subtitle 12/16 pt, 18 mm margins and 10 mm trim. Map spread 420 x 297 mm, labels 9 pt, legend 7/10 pt. Panel 1200 x 800 mm, title 200 mm, notes 18/24 pt.

Pre-production check

A two-colour offset run at 54 pt drops the fine paint texture into a flat grey and the cover looks like a plain stencil. Print the texture as a separate 20 percent plate or accept the flat look, and check one printed cover before the run.
