Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Module 24.

Module 24 is a modular pixel typeface on an eight-bit grid: uppercase and lowercase are drawn at a medium weight with clean stepped diagonals, while the numerals are deliberately oversized and heavier so a score or a price reads first. Because every edge falls on the grid, the face reproduces without softening at small sizes on screen and stays crisp in a bi-level plot or a laser cut. It is a screen-native alphabet, best used where the pixel construction is the message, and its counters are open enough for a two-line poster title.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Module 24’s stroke geometry.

Editorial & posters

Tech-art exhibition poster, indie game dialogue card and chip-tune album

The visible grid reads as a system rather than a retro pastiche, which suits exhibitions about computation, and stepped diagonals hold up on a large poster where anti-aliased curves would look soft. Oversized numerals give a poster its date or edition number as a graphic element.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Poster A1, title 30 percent of the width, edition numeral 300 mm tall, 40 mm margins, grid locked to 12 mm modules. Dialogue card 1920 x 1080, type at 3x the base 40 px grid, 8 percent safe margin. Album 312 x 312 mm, title 26 mm, tracklist 7/10 pt.

Pre-production check

Scaling a pixel face by a non-integer factor destroys the grid and produces uneven pixel sizes. Lock the ratio to whole multiples of the source module, and check the final PDF at 100 percent for irregular steps.

Classroom & school

Robotics-club shirt, coding-camp badge and esports team number

A grid face signals technical membership without a cartoon mascot, which is how a school robotics club wants to look on a shirt. Oversized numerals read a team number from across a gym, and the bi-level shapes embroider predictably.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Shirt print 250 x 300 mm on the back, club name 40 mm, number 120 mm on the chest. Badge 70 x 45 mm, name 8 mm, 3 mm border. Jersey number 200 mm tall, outline 8 mm.

Pre-production check

Embroidery software converts stepped diagonals into staircases wider than the design intent at 120 mm. Request a digitised sew-out, and if a diagonal reads as a staircase, swap to a printed transfer for the number rather than thickening it.

Birthday

Gamer party invite, arcade-token favour tag and cake topper

The eight-bit grid reads as a game screen at a glance, so a birthday invite lands its theme in one second without an illustration. Numbers are the loudest glyphs in the face, which is useful when the age is the headline.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Invite A6, age numeral 40 mm, name 10 mm, details 4 mm on a 6 mm leading, 10 mm margins. Token tag 40 mm circle, word 5 mm, hole 3 mm. Topper 120 x 100 mm on 2 mm card, age 60 mm, 8 mm stick slot.

Pre-production check

Cake toppers are printed on card and pushed into sugar; the food-safe stick must not pass through printed ink that touches the cake. Print single-sided with the artwork above the 8 mm slot line and check the assembled topper for ink contact.
