Hand-cut brush script stencil

Matryk Stencil

Matryk Stencil is a hand-cut brush script in black with a thick white outline on burlap: heavy connected lowercase strokes, an oversized capital that lifts into a loop, and cut-out bridges through several letters, so the pair reads as a paper stencil laid on the table.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Matryk Stencil.

The two words are stacked and the drawing is a brush script that has been adapted for cutting: the strokes are heavy and rounded, the joins are thick, and the bridges are placed where a craft knife could leave a clean bridge, which is what separates a stencil script from a decorated one. The outline is even and thick, and it reads as the edge of the cut sheet rather than as a stroke, which is why the pair looks like a physical object on the burlap. Spacing is tight so the words hold together as one cut shape, and the descenders of the second line are long enough to give the block a base. A small handwritten line beneath explains the face in the same voice, and the photograph of burlap, wood and a grass plant gives the whole page the texture of a craft table.

Brand & packaging

Sign for a craft market stall

A hand-cut stencil reads as a made object, which is the message a craft stall needs, and the stencil bridges mean the sign can be sprayed through a paper mask in minutes.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A2 board: the stall name at 110 mm cap height, the prices in a 20 mm casual sans, and a 5 mm border. Keep the bridges at least 8 mm wide so a paper mask survives the spray, and print on a plain ground so the cut edges read.

Pre-production check

Check the mask at full size, where a bridge under 6 mm tears when the paper is lifted; widen the bridges. Confirm the 20 mm prices read at two metres and that the outline weight stays even after spraying.

Birthday

Banner for a farmhouse party

A stencil script gives a rustic party banner the look of a painted feed sack, and the heavy strokes stay legible on fabric at the end of a long table.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print 700 by 400 mm: the name at 120 mm cap height with a 6 mm outline, the age in a 30 mm casual sans, and a 4 mm border. Keep the outline even across every letter and print two colours on a natural fabric.

Pre-production check

Check the banner at four metres, where an uneven outline can look like a printing error; keep the weight constant. Confirm the 30 mm age reads at two metres and that the bridges do not make letters read as broken.

Classroom & school

Cut file for a classroom display

A stencil display lets a teacher cut lettering from card without a steady hand, and the heavy script reads as decorative while staying simple enough for a school cutting machine.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Cut A4 sheets: each word at 60 mm cap height with a 3 mm minimum stroke, and 5 mm bridges. Keep the words to two lines so the card does not warp, and leave 10 mm between letters for the blade to clear.

Pre-production check

Check the cut file at 60 mm, where a bridge under 4 mm can tear in card; widen it. Confirm the letters seat flat on a wall display and that the display reads from the back of a classroom.
