Visual anatomy & craft review
Kiva is a curly storybook display in which the ascenders and descenders end in ball-drop hooks: a soft rounded stem, a small bracketed curve at the shoulder and a heavy bead that hangs off the terminal. The hooks grow the word vertically at both ends, and the bead is the one detail that disappears first. It needs roughly 32 mm for the hook and the ball drop to read, and it is best in one deep ink on cream, or a fine gold on a dark ground where the beads print as bright points.

A hooked storybook display reads as a printed fairy tale rather than a modern cover, which is what a small press wants on a reissue. The ball drops give the title rhythm at 48 pt, and one deep ink keeps the hooks sharp on a matte sheet.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Cover 130 x 198 mm, title 48 pt with 10 mm hook clearance, author 16 pt, 12 mm margins. Chapter opener 24 pt, text 10/14 pt. Title page 130 x 198 mm, title 30 pt, imprint 8/11 pt.
Pre-production check
At 24 pt on the chapter opener the ball drops fill into a knob and the words read as broken marks. Keep the face for the cover and title page, set openers in the body face, and proof one cover at 1:1.
A hooked storybook display reads as a warning told aloud rather than a cartoon monster, which is what a story night at a small venue wants. The hooks hold at 110 mm on a poster, and one deep ink plus a spot colour prints the poster, the ticket and the labels.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Poster A2, word 110 mm with 12 mm hook clearance, times 36 mm, 20 mm margins. Ticket 100 x 50 mm, word 14 mm, 4 mm perforation. Box label 100 x 70 mm, word 18 mm, 5 mm die margin.
Pre-production check
A 100 x 50 mm ticket at 14 mm closes the bead into a dot and the word reads as a plain rounded display. Raise the ticket to 20 mm, and check one ticket before the batch.
A hooked display announces a fairy-tale party in the lettering, so the invite needs no illustration. The beads read at 36 mm, and one ink prints the invite, the topper and the tags in one order.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Invite A6, word 36 mm with 10 mm hook clearance, details 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Topper 130 x 110 mm, word 44 mm with a 6 mm stick slot and 12 mm clear. Favour tag 40 x 70 mm, word 12 mm with a 4 mm hole and 8 mm clear.
Pre-production check
A 130 mm laser-cut topper thins the ball drop under 1 mm and it snaps on the stick. Cut the topper without hooks, and test one before the party.
