Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Moure Kelati.

Moure Kelati is a weathered woodland storybook display whose disconnected letters curl spirals on the M, K and L and top their i dots with star and flower shapes, so a word reads as a page from a rough-edged fairy tale rather than a smooth script. The rough edge is baked into the contour, which means the face holds at large sizes and turns to noise below about 26 mm. It needs roughly 26 mm for the edge to read as paper rather than dirt, and it is best in parchment cream on a dark forest ground or in one dark ink on cream.

Editorial & posters

Folk-tale cover, chapter opener and map title

Rough storybook letters read as a tale collected from an oral source, which is what a folk-tale edition wants. The spiral capitals give the title its character, and the weathered contour holds at 54 pt on uncoated stock.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Cover 130 x 198 mm, title 54 pt with 8 mm spiral clearance, author 14 pt, 15 mm margins. Opener 420 x 297 mm, chapter 90 mm, body 10/15 pt. Map title 210 x 100 mm, word 40 mm, 15 mm margins.

Pre-production check

A 54 pt rough contour on uncoated stock spreads and the title looks like a bad scan. Keep the title at 60 pt or print on coated stock, and check one printed cover before the run.

Halloween

Woodland-fright poster, trail sign and prop label

Weathered storybook letters read as a tale told in a dark wood, which is what a Halloween trail posts at the entrance. The rough edge survives a one-colour print on a painted board, and the spiral capitals carry the mood without an illustration.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Poster A2, word 260 mm, times 22/28 pt, 30 mm margins and 20 mm trim. Sign 600 x 900 mm, word 120 mm, 50 mm margins and 30 mm frame clearance. Prop label 90 x 140 mm, word 20 mm, 12 mm margins.

Pre-production check

A trail sign printed on plywood shows every flute and the rough contour reads as poor registration. Print on a flat panel or a vinyl wrap, and check one mounted sign in torchlight before the trail opens.

Winter

Winter-tale card, forest-market sign and gift tag

A weathered tale face reads as a midwinter story rather than a Christmas campaign, which lets a shop sell through January. The rough contour holds at 22 mm on a card, and one pale ink on a dark green ground gives it the cold-woodland mood.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Card 120 x 170 mm, greeting 22 mm, message 8/12 pt, 14 mm margins. Sign 600 x 400 mm, word 110 mm, 40 mm margins. Tag 50 x 90 mm, word 10 mm with a 5 mm hole and 6 mm clear card.

Pre-production check

A 10 mm tag shrinks the rough edge into speckle that reads as a printing fault on kraft. Keep tags at 14 mm or use a clean face, and check one printed tag before the batch.
