Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Jaya.

Jaya is a Western Tuscan serif rendered as three-dimensional chiselled gold: each letter is beveled on two edges, the facets are shaded from light to dark and the caps carry spur serifs and a chiselled inner counter. The facet shading is the face's whole character, so it needs size to read as a solid object rather than a smudge, and the bevel edges are the smallest element. It needs roughly 40 mm for the bevel to read, and it is best as a paper-colour build on dark stock, or a single gold ink with the bevel left as unprinted highlights at 50 mm and above.

Brand & packaging

Whiskey-bar identity, mirror decal and bottle label

A chiselled gold Western serif reads as a saloon mirror rather than a modern bar logo, which is what a themed whiskey room wants behind its bar. The bevel gives the name object weight at 60 mm, and one gold ink on dark stock keeps the facet highlights as bare paper so the letter reads as metal.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Mirror decal 800 x 300 mm, word 100 mm with 12 mm bevel clearance, 30 mm margins. Bottle label 90 x 70 mm, word 20 mm, 5 mm margins. Menu cover 150 x 230 mm, title 44 pt, 15 mm margins.

Pre-production check

A 90 x 70 mm bottle label at 20 mm collapses the facets into a flat gold bar and the name loses its depth entirely. Keep the label word at 28 mm or use the flat variant, and check one label on the bottle before the run.

Editorial & posters

Feature opener, award plaque and section rule

A three-dimensional Western serif gives a feature about craft or heritage the weight of a cast plaque rather than a typeset headline. The bevel reads at 60 pt on a matte page, and the spur serifs align the title with the column grid so the depth does not break the layout.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Opener 210 x 297 mm, title 60 pt with 10 mm bevel clearance, standfirst 11/15 pt, body 9/13 pt, 18 mm margins. Award plaque 120 x 80 mm, word 24 pt, 8 mm margins. Section rule 180 mm wide.

Pre-production check

Printed on a coated page the bevel highlights turn into a metallic sheen and the title greys at an angle. Specify matte stock or keep the bevel to the plaque, and proof one opener at 1:1.

Halloween

Haunted-saloon poster, ticket and bottle label

A chiselled Victorian serif reads as the sign over a haunted saloon, which is the right prop for a themed fright night. The bevel catches the eye at 130 mm across a poster, and one gold on black prints the poster, the ticket and the bottle label as a single set.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Poster A2, word 130 mm with 15 mm bevel clearance, times 40 mm, 20 mm margins. Ticket 100 x 50 mm, word 14 mm, 4 mm perforation. Bottle label 80 x 60 mm, word 18 mm, 5 mm margins.

Pre-production check

A 100 x 50 mm ticket at 14 mm turns the facet shading into dirt and the word reads as a worn sticker. Raise the ticket word to 20 mm or print one flat gold, and check one ticket in the venue lighting.
