Distressed typewriter slab

Unexpected Typewriter

Unexpected Typewriter is a distressed typewriter slab in dark ink on aged paper: light uniform strokes, blunt slab serifs, a fixed advance with ragged breaks, and a worn edge that eats the outlines at random, with a line of tracked notes beneath and a vintage natural-history illustration behind.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Unexpected Typewriter.

The lines are set in a narrow measure and the drawing is a monospaced slab: every character advances by the same width, the serifs are blunt, and the stroke is uniform, which is what gives the face its mechanical, letter-press tone. The distress is heavy and random, so the text reads as a second-generation carbon rather than a digital face, and the specimen shows it in lowercase and in a short list with arrow markers, which is a fair test of a face intended for annotations and archive copy. Because the wear eats the edges, the face works at small sizes only if the print is clean, and the plate sets a modest size on a pale sheet with an illustration behind. The palette is one ink, and the illustration is a period engraving that keeps the plate in tone.

Practical applications

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Unexpected Typewriter’s stroke geometry.

Editorial & posters

Body setting for a journal

A monospaced typewriter face gives a journal an archival tone, and the fixed advance keeps a ragged column aligned without manual spacing work.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A5 journal: the body at 9.5 pt with 14 pt leading, the headings at 13 pt in the same face, and a 14 mm margin. Print one ink on an uncoated stock and keep the measure at about fifty-eight characters.

Pre-production check

Check the 9.5 pt body on uncoated paper, where a worn edge can break up in the fibre; test one page on the actual stock. Confirm the leading holds the column and that the measure stays under sixty characters.

Brand & packaging

Packaging for a small archive

A typewriter face reads as a considered archive label, and the monospace grid lets a long reference number sit evenly on a small sticker.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 60 by 40 mm label: the reference at 8 pt, the contents at 7 pt, and the date at 6 pt. Keep 3 mm inside the die and print one ink on a kraft stock so the worn edges read as impression.

Pre-production check

Check the 6 pt date on kraft, where a distressed stroke can fill; keep the size at or above 7 pt for the smallest line. Confirm the label reads at arm's length and survives a damp wipe.

Wedding

Menu for a rustic wedding

A typewriter face suits a relaxed, rustic setting, and the monospace rhythm keeps a list of courses aligned without a table.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A5 menu: the heading at 16 pt, the courses at 9.5 pt with 15 pt leading, and the date at 8 pt. Keep 22 mm margins and print one ink on a kraft card so the texture reads as letterpress.

Pre-production check

Check the 9.5 pt courses at table distance, where the distress can reduce contrast; deepen the ink. Confirm the heading reads across the table and that the date clears the trim by 10 mm.
