Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Graduation Congrats.

Graduation Congrats is a monoline print alphabet with wide rounded bowls, a generously open aperture and a gentle bounce that keeps the line from marching, drawn specifically so a plotter pen can trace it in one continuous weight. Because the stroke is uniform and the counters are large, the shapes survive at very small sizes on a card and at very large sizes on a banner without changing character. It is disconnected, not cursive, which makes it the more practical choice for a name that a reader has to find quickly in a crowd, and it reproduces cleanly from a single-colour pen or a single screen.

Classroom & school

Plotter-pen money-holder card, ceremony signage and gift tag

A single-weight alphabet draws cleanly from a Cricut pen without the double-lining that a contrast face produces, so the card looks hand-written by a machine that was set up properly. Wide bowls keep a graduate's name readable at 9 mm where a script would knot.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Card 105 x 148 mm, name 12 mm, message 6/9 pt plain sans, 10 mm margins, fold scored 2 mm inside the die. Signage 400 x 300 mm, name 40 mm. Tag 50 x 90 mm, name 7 mm, hole 5 mm clear.

Pre-production check

Plotter pens skip on coated card and leave a broken bowl on the 'a' and 'g'. Test the pen on the actual stock at the slowest speed, and if it skips, move the inside text to a printed layer and keep the pen only for the name.

Birthday

Teacher-retirement card, You Did It mug and congratulations banner

Round bowls read warm and congratulatory without the sentimentality of a script, which fits a retirement card signed by a whole staff. Uniform weight transfers onto a mug without the thin joins that break in a dishwasher.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Card 148 x 105 mm, greeting 14 mm, 30 signatures on a 12 mm grid, 8 mm margins. Mug wrap 210 x 85 mm, greeting 24 mm, 10 mm from the handle. Banner 900 x 300 mm, three words at 70 mm, 40 mm margins.

Pre-production check

Ceramic decals fire at 800 degrees and a monoline under 0.4 mm can disappear in the firing. Ask the printer for the thinnest fired line, keep the smallest text above 4 mm, and check one fired mug for fade before the batch.

Thank you

Volunteer thank-you card set, library tote and staff-room poster

Open apertures and an unjoined hand make a short thank-you phrase easy to read at arm's length in a busy corridor, which is where a staff-room poster actually gets seen. The bounce keeps the message from feeling like a memo.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Card 105 x 148 mm, greeting 16 mm, message 7/10 pt, 10 mm margins. Tote panel 280 x 280 mm, greeting 34 mm, 28 mm to the seam. Poster A3, headline 60 pt, two lines maximum, details 14/18 pt.

Pre-production check

Single-colour screen print on a canvas tote bleeds about 1 mm into the weave, closing the counters of small letters. Print at 34 mm and above, or add 3 percent ink reduction and inspect one washed tote.
