Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Svara.

Svara is a contemporary editorial serif duo: a text regular with moderate contrast, sharp wedge serifs and open apertures, plus a matching italic with a true cursive slant and a slightly narrower advance. The pair is built for long reading, so the italic can carry emphasis inline without changing colour, and the regular holds at caption sizes. It needs roughly 16 mm for the wedge serif to read in display use, and it is best in one black on soft white, and in the italic as a second voice rather than a second colour, shipped as OTF, TTF and WOFF for screen.

Editorial & posters

Feature opener, running text and inline emphasis

A wedge-serif text face with a true italic is what a long feature actually needs, because emphasis stays in the same colour instead of jumping to bold. The open apertures hold at 9 pt in a two-column measure, and the italic sets titles of works inline without a second typographic voice.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Opener 210 x 297 mm, headline 48 pt with 8 mm serif clearance, standfirst 11/15 pt, body 9/13.5 pt in two columns of 82 mm, 18 mm margins. Captions 8/11 pt, work titles in italic.

Pre-production check

Set at 9 pt on a 82 mm column on uncoated stock the wedge serifs break up and the text greys into a wash. Print on a smooth text sheet at 9.5 pt and 13.5 pt leading, and proof one signature.

Brand & packaging

Publisher identity, catalogue cover and imprint page

An editorial serif duo gives a small press a mark that reads as a printed imprint rather than a studio logo. The regular sets the press name at 36 pt with authority, and the italic supplies the imprint line in the same family so the catalogue cover stays one voice.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Catalogue cover 170 x 240 mm, name 36 pt, subtitle in italic 14 pt, 18 mm margins. Imprint page 148 x 210 mm, name 11 pt, details 8/11.5 pt. Card 85 x 55 mm, name 12 pt, italic line 8 pt.

Pre-production check

On an 85 x 55 mm card the italic imprint line at 8 pt fills its wedges and reads as bold rather than slanted. Keep the italic at 9 pt and above on card stock, and print one card before the order.

Wedding

Invitation, order of service and menu

A contemporary serif duo keeps a wedding formal without calligraphy, which is what a couple wanting a printed-book feel will choose. The regular holds the names at 26 pt, and the italic sets the venue and date line so the invitation reads as set type rather than decoration.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Invitation 130 x 180 mm, names 26 pt, details 9/13 pt, 15 mm margins. Order of service 105 x 148 mm, header 16 pt, text 8/11 pt. Menu 120 x 210 mm, course heads in italic 10 pt, dishes 9/13 pt.

Pre-production check

At 8 pt inside the order of service the italic wedges fill and the hymn titles look bolder than the headings above them. Raise the text to 9.5 pt or use the roman for hymns, and proof one booklet before the set.
