Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Dean.

Dean is a bold geometric block display whose thick stems are filled with parallel maze and circuit-board pathways, so each letter reads as a routed panel rather than an outlined shape. The caps are wide and squared, the pathways run diagonally inside them, and the maze is fine enough that it needs size to resolve — roughly 30 mm. Because the fill is graphic, the face works as a single-colour silhouette on a dark ground and reads as technical infrastructure at any scale above the floor, while below it the pathways turn into a grey tone.

Practical applications

Project & layout

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Dean’s stroke geometry.

Brand & packaging

Tech-event signage, lanyard badge and hardware box

Circuit pathways inside the letters read as infrastructure, which is the register a hardware or developer brand wants. The maze fill gives a one-colour graphic that holds at poster size.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Sign 900 x 400 mm, word 180 mm, 60 mm margins and 25 mm clear of every fixing. Badge 90 x 60 mm, name 14 mm, 8 mm of solid card around the clip slot. Box 300 x 150 x 100 mm, word 60 mm on the lid with 25 mm margins.

Pre-production check

Pathways under 0.5 mm at 60 mm merge into a solid fill on a litho box print. Check one 1:1 proof, and enlarge the word rather than the pathway spacing if the maze closes.

Editorial & posters

Cyberpunk sleeve, tech-conference poster and zine cover

Routed letterforms read as a display panel, which is the reference a cyberpunk release wants over a neon photograph. The silhouette survives being printed on cheap stock in one ink.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Sleeve 312 x 312 mm plus 3 mm bleed, word 220 mm, credits 7 pt. Poster A2, word 300 mm, details 22/28 pt, 30 mm margins. Zine A5, header 50 mm, body 8.5/12 pt.

Pre-production check

Streaming thumbnails at 55 px turn the maze into noise. Check the title at that size, and use a solid variant for thumbnails while keeping the maze for the sleeve.

Summer

Festival gate sign, wristband and stage banner

A maze fill reads as a printed panel at a distance, and the wide caps fill a banner without repetition. One ink keeps a festival print affordable.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Gate sign 900 x 400 mm, word 160 mm, 60 mm margins. Wristband 250 x 25 mm, word 7 mm, 3 mm fold clearance. Banner 2000 x 600 mm, word 340 mm, 120 mm margins.

Pre-production check

Woven wristbands cannot hold a maze and the pattern becomes a grey band. Use a solid glyph on the band, and check one woven proof at 1:1 before the event order.
