Letterform structure
of Checkered Varsity.
CHECKERED over VARSITY fills the card on a warm cream ground, the letters slanted on a firm italic axis and each one built from a chequered field that follows the shape of the stroke rather than sitting behind it. The chequer is regular where the stroke is wide and breaks into smaller squares where it narrows, so the pattern bends with the letter instead of flattening it, and a thin outline holds each shape together. Between the two words a small single-seater racing car is drawn in the same cream and black with a yellow nose, and below it the word FONT repeats the treatment at a smaller size. A caption in the chequered face sits at the top to show the style twice. The face is a headline cut: at 40 pt the squares turn into a grey texture, so it wants a big size, and the italic demands a deliberate slant in any layout that mixes it with upright type.
