Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Beltino.

Beltino is a swashed vintage gothic blackletter with a regular and a slant cut and a large glyph set: the body is dense and vertical, the ascenders open into curved swashes and the caps carry a drawn flourish that runs above the line. The swashes make a word grow tall, and the hairline connectors are the weakest element in print. It needs roughly 34 mm for the swash and the connectors to read, and it is best in one black on cream or a single dark gold on parchment, and it should never be reversed at small sizes.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Beltino’s stroke geometry.

Brand & packaging

Tavern identity, bottle label and tap badge

A swashed vintage blackletter reads as a medieval tavern mark rather than a modern brewery logo, which is what a themed taproom wants on its badge. The flourish gives the name weight at 26 mm, and one dark ink on a light ground keeps the connectors open.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Bottle label 90 x 70 mm, word 26 mm with 6 mm swash clearance, style 9 mm, 5 mm margins. Tap badge 75 mm round, word 16 mm, 5 mm die margin. Coaster 95 mm square, word 14 mm, 5 mm die margin.

Pre-production check

On a 90 x 70 mm label the 9 mm style line bridges its hairline connectors into a bar and the style becomes unreadable. Keep the style line in the roman at 10 mm, and print one label on the production stock before the run.

Halloween

Fright-night poster, ticket and prop label

A vintage blackletter with swashes reads as a period sign rather than a modern horror flyer, which is what a themed haunt wants at its entrance. The flourish holds at 120 mm across a poster, and one black plus a spot colour prints the poster, the ticket and the prop labels for one season.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Poster A2, word 120 mm with 12 mm swash clearance, times 40 mm, 20 mm margins. Ticket 100 x 50 mm, word 14 mm, 4 mm perforation. Prop label 70 x 50 mm, word 12 mm, 4 mm margins.

Pre-production check

Reversed white out of black at 14 mm the connectors fill and the ticket word becomes an unreadable smear. Print the ticket black on pale stock or raise it to 20 mm, and check one ticket before the batch.

Editorial & posters

Gothic-novel cover, drop cap and running head

A swashed gothic reads as a printed incunable rather than a modern cover, which is what a gothic reissue wants. The dense body gives the title a solid mass at 60 pt, and the slant cut supplies the emphasis line without a second family.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Cover 130 x 198 mm, title 60 pt with 10 mm swash clearance, author 18 pt, 12 mm margins. Drop cap 4 lines, 24 pt text. Running head 10 pt slant, 8 mm from the trim.

Pre-production check

At 10 pt the running head's connectors disappear on an uncoated text stock and the words read as broken black marks. Set running heads at 12 pt or in the roman, and proof one signature at 1:1.
