Visual anatomy & craft review
Way to Alaska is a twenty-font vintage signboard superfamily built around a heritage script and a companion serif, with layered shadows, inlines, outlines and small ornaments that all share one skeleton. The size of the family means a whole shopfront can be built from one voice, but the layers must be picked deliberately or a panel turns into a stack of outlines. The script needs roughly 24 mm and the serif 20 mm for their detail to read, and two inks cover most of the family.

A vintage signboard family lets a shopfront, a bag and a card use one voice with different layers, which is how a heritage storefront actually works. The script holds the name at 60 mm, and the companion serif sets the offer at 22 mm.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Board 1200 x 600 mm, script 120 mm with 12 mm swash clearance, serif 30 mm, 30 mm margins. Card 85 x 55 mm, script 20 mm, serif 8 pt, 5 mm margins. Bag print 200 x 250 mm, script 50 mm, serif 12 mm, 15 mm margins.
Pre-production check
On an 85 x 55 mm card the script's swashes touch and the name reads as a ribbon. Keep the card word at 26 mm, and check one card before the run.
A heritage script with a companion serif reads as a printed acknowledgement rather than a modern note. The script holds at 22 mm on a card, and the serif sets the address at 8 pt in the same ink.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Card A6, script 22 mm with 8 mm swash clearance, serif 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Tag 50 x 90 mm, script 20 mm, serif 8 mm, 5 mm hole with 8 mm clear. Wrap band 200 x 40 mm, script 14 mm, 6 mm margins.
Pre-production check
On a 200 x 40 mm band the script crosses the fold and splits when wrapped. Keep the word 8 mm clear of the crease, and wrap one band before the order.
A signboard family gives an autumn fair a printed bill rather than a modern flyer. The script holds at 100 mm on a poster, and the serif sets the times at 26 mm in the same pass.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Poster A2, script 120 mm with 12 mm swash clearance, serif 30 mm, 20 mm margins. Tent sign 600 x 400 mm, script 90 mm, serif 22 mm, 25 mm margins. Prize label 90 x 60 mm, script 16 mm, serif 9 mm, 5 mm margins.
Pre-production check
A 90 x 60 mm prize label at 16 mm fills the swash and the word reads as a stain. Raise the label word to 22 mm, and print one label before the batch.
