Condensed blackletter with sharp spurs

Varkenzor

Varkenzor is a condensed blackletter in ochre on black inside an ornamental frame: tall narrow strokes, sharp spurs on the capitals, tight spacing that fuses the word into a band, and small diamond ornaments separating the motto words.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Varkenzor.

The name runs the full width of the frame, and the construction is closer to a textura than the looser fraktur cuts: the strokes are vertical and narrow, the feet break into flat serifs, and the capitals carry long spurs that extend above and below the x-height, so the word reads as a carved inscription rather than a written one. Because the letters are condensed and closely spaced, the counters are thin slits, which is the intended effect at display size but rules the face out for anything under about 40 pt. The motto beneath is set in spaced capitals with a diamond between the words, and the frame is a thin double rule with corner flourishes and a centre ornament, so the whole specimen imitates a book plate. The ground is a mottled black, which lets the ochre read as old ink, and the ornaments are drawn in the same line weight as the frame so nothing competes with the lettering.

Practical applications

Project & layout

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Varkenzor’s stroke geometry.

Halloween

Cover for a ghost-story collection

A condensed blackletter cover sets the genre in one word and the ornamental frame carries the period detail that would otherwise need an illustration.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the title at 80 pt across 160 mm on a 216 mm cover, place the motto in 9 pt caps beneath, and draw the frame 12 mm inside the trim with a 0.5 pt double rule. Keep the author credit in a plain serif at the foot.

Pre-production check

Check the slitted counters at 80 pt on the chosen stock, where the ochre ink can close them; proof before signing off. Confirm the frame rule stays inside the trim by 12 mm on all four sides and that the 9 pt motto reads at arm's length.

Brand & packaging

Label for a small brewery's dark ale

A condensed blackletter gives a dark ale label the look of an old German brewery while staying readable at bottle distance, which a looser gothic does not at small sizes.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 65 mm round label: the name at 16 pt on a single line, the style in 7.5 pt spaced caps beneath, and the abv in 6.5 pt at the base. Keep 4 mm clear below the name for the curved edge of the die.

Pre-production check

Check the 16 pt version at actual size, where condensed blackletters below 18 pt fill in; open the tracking by 20 units for the label only. Confirm the 6.5 pt abv survives the label's curve and that the ochre keeps a 4.5:1 contrast on the dark stock.

Editorial & posters

Part title for a collected edition

A blackletter part title separates the sections of a collected edition without a photograph, and the ornamental frame gives the page the look of a bound volume.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the part title at 60 pt centred on a 140 by 216 mm page, the part number in 10 pt caps above, and a 0.5 pt frame at 15 mm. Print in one ink and leave the verso blank so the ornament reads as a divider.

Pre-production check

Check the page in proof at actual size, where a blackletter's thin joins can fill and make the title muddy on uncoated paper. Confirm the frame stays 15 mm from the trim, the part number clears the title's spurs by 6 mm, and the title still reads at thumbnail size in a shop listing.
