Visual anatomy & craft review
Thornveil is an all-caps blackletter built for dark metal and cathedral signage: the stems are dense and vertical, the ascenders split into barbed thorns, the connectors are hairline and the counters are tight enough that a word reads as a black mass with pale slits. The thorns sit on the silhouette and the hairline connectors fail first in print. It needs roughly 36 mm for the thorns and the counters to stay separate, and it is best in one dense black on bone or a single silver on matte black, never reversed at small sizes.

A barbed blackletter reads as a printed occult title rather than a modern horror layout, which is what a small press wants for a reissue. The dense mass gives the title presence at 60 pt, and the thorns stay legible in one ink on a pale text stock.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Cover 130 x 198 mm, title 60 pt with 10 mm thorn clearance, author 16 pt, 12 mm margins. Chapter opener 28 pt, text 10/14 pt. Spine mark 12 mm wide, 10 mm tall.
Pre-production check
At 12 mm on the spine the thorns merge into a ragged edge and the mark reads as a printing defect on the shelf. Use a single ornament on the spine, and proof one cover with the printer before the run.
A barbed all-caps blackletter reads as a warning carved into stone, which is the register a serious scare attraction wants rather than a cartoon. The thorns hold at 130 mm across a poster, and one silver ink on matte black prints the poster, the ticket and the prop labels for one season.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Poster A2, word 130 mm with 14 mm thorn clearance, times 40 mm, 20 mm margins. Ticket 100 x 50 mm, word 14 mm, 4 mm perforation. Prop label 70 x 50 mm, word 12 mm, 4 mm margins.
Pre-production check
A 100 x 50 mm ticket at 14 mm fills the hairline connectors and the word prints as a black shard. Print tickets at 20 mm on pale stock instead of reversing, and check one ticket before the batch.
A thorned blackletter is the lettering a metal label already uses, so an identity in it reads as the scene rather than a costume. The dense body holds at 40 mm on a patch, and one black pass prints the sleeve and the card without a second plate.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Patch 90 x 60 mm, word 20 mm with 6 mm thorn clearance, 5 mm edge margin. Sleeve print 120 x 300 mm, word 60 mm, 15 mm margins. Card 85 x 55 mm, word 14 mm, 5 mm margins.
Pre-production check
At 20 mm on an embroidered patch the connectors stitch shut and the thorns read as burrs. Keep patch lettering at 28 mm or use a printed patch, and approve one sample before the order.
