Condensed blackletter display with swashes

Runholdy

Runholdy is a condensed blackletter in black on bone: heavy narrow letters with long hairline swashes that leave the word entirely, sharp spurs on the capitals, and a red dragon illustration printed as a band beneath.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Runholdy.

The word is set across the middle and the drawing is a display blackletter rather than a textura: the stems are heavy and narrow, the capitals carry long swashes that rise above the line and curl back, and the spurs are cut to points that break the silhouette. Because the letters are condensed, the word reads as a dense block with sharp edges, and the swashes give the eye somewhere to rest outside that block. The specimen is laid out like a printed specimen sheet, with a plate at the top, side labels naming the style and the glyph count, and a starburst badge, all in two inks on a bone ground. The dragon band beneath the word uses the same ink, so the illustration and the type read as one printed object.

Editorial & posters

Cover for a fantasy novel

A condensed blackletter with swashes gives a fantasy cover the heraldic weight the genre expects, and the dragon band can be replaced with the author's name without a redesign.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the title at 60 pt on a 198 by 129 mm cover, the author in a 14 pt blackletter beneath, and keep the swash inside a 12 mm margin. Print two inks on a bone stock so the hairline swashes read as pen work.

Pre-production check

Check the hairline swashes at 60 pt on the paperback stock, where a stroke under 0.2 pt can break; thicken the swash for that stock. Confirm the 14 pt author reads on the shelf and that the swash does not run into the trim.

Halloween

Poster for a masquerade

A blackletter with swashes sets a masquerade in a historic register, and the density of the lettering reads at a distance where a lighter gothic would thin out.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A2 portrait: the title at 120 mm cap height, the details in a 16 mm serif beneath, and a 4 mm rule at 25 mm from the trim. Keep the type on a dark ground in one ink so the swashes read as fine lines.

Pre-production check

Check the swashes at full size, where the curls can fill in on a dark ground; keep the strokes at least 0.4 mm. Confirm the 16 mm details read at three metres and that the rule does not cut through a swash.

Brand & packaging

Label for a small distillery

A condensed blackletter gives a spirit label a sense of age, and the narrow letterforms let a long house name fit a small label without shrinking the cap height.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 70 by 100 mm label: the name at 18 pt, the expression in a 7 pt serif, and the strength in 6.5 pt. Keep the swash on the first capital only and leave 5 mm of clear space around the word.

Pre-production check

Check the 18 pt name on the label, where the thin swash can disappear in the stock's texture; thicken the swash for print. Confirm the 6.5 pt strength reads on the curve and that the swash stays inside the die line.
