Letterform structure
of Makyos Gothic.
Two words are stacked and the face is a decorated blackletter: the stems are heavy and vertically stressed, the joins are hairlines, the serifs break into diamond points, and the counters are filled with spun filigree that turns each letter into a small ornament. Long swashes leave the first and the last letter and travel across the width of the block, so the two words read as one drawing rather than two lines. The weight distribution is extreme, which keeps the word legible in the middle while the decoration clusters at the edges. The sample places the block over a dark floral still life, and the page is closed by small studio marks, a barcode and a glyph count in the corners. The palette is white on near-black with a warm bloom. Makyos Gothic is a decorative face for music artwork, luxury packaging, event posters and editorial covers with a ceremonial mood, and it needs one or two short words at a large size and a dark ground.
