Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Bathory.

Bathory is an ornate medieval blackletter family with a dense texture, sharp diamond terminals, hairline connecting strokes and a Regular plus an Oblique for emphasis. The oblique slants the whole texture, which is the only italic this family offers, and the hairlines are its weakest part in print. It needs roughly 30 mm for the diamond terminals to read, and it is best in one black on cream or a single dark red on parchment tones, never reversed at small sizes.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Bathory’s stroke geometry.

Editorial & posters

Gothic-novel cover, chapter drop cap and running head

An ornate blackletter reads as a printed incunable rather than a modern cover, which is exactly the register a gothic novel wants. The dense texture gives the title a solid black mass at 60 pt, and the oblique supplies the emphasis line without introducing a second family on the cover.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Cover 130 x 198 mm, title 60 pt with 8 mm terminal clearance, author 18 pt, 12 mm margins. Drop cap 4 lines, 24 pt text. Running head 10 pt oblique, 8 mm from the trim.

Pre-production check

At 10 pt the running head's hairline connectors disappear on uncoated text stock and the words read as broken black marks. Set running heads at 12 pt or in the roman, and proof one signature at 1:1.

Halloween

Fright-night poster, ticket and sweet-box label

A dense blackletter is the lettering a haunted attraction already uses on its signage, so a poster in it reads as the real thing rather than a costume. The sharp terminals hold at 120 mm across a doorway, and one black on a dark ground with a single spot red prints the whole set cheaply for one night.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Poster A2, word 120 mm with 12 mm terminal clearance, times 40 mm, 20 mm margins. Ticket 100 x 50 mm, word 14 mm, 4 mm perforation. Box label 100 x 70 mm, word 16 mm, 5 mm die margin.

Pre-production check

Reversed white out of black at 14 mm the hairline connectors fill and the ticket word becomes an unreadable smear. Print the ticket black on light stock or raise the word to 20 mm, and check one ticket before the batch.

Brand & packaging

Brewery identity, bottle label and tap badge

An ornate blackletter reads as a monastery or historic brewery mark, which is what a small craft brewery wants on a tap badge rather than a modern sans. The dense texture gives the name weight at 24 mm, and the oblique supplies the beer style line in the same family so the label stays one voice.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Bottle label 90 x 70 mm, name 24 mm with 5 mm terminal clearance, style 9 mm oblique, 5 mm margins. Tap badge 75 mm round, name 16 mm, 4 mm die margin. Coaster 95 mm square, name 14 mm, 5 mm die margin.

Pre-production check

On a 90 x 70 mm label the 9 mm oblique style line bridges its hairlines into a black bar and the beer style becomes unreadable. Keep the style in the roman at 10 mm, and print one label on the production stock before the run.
