Chunky groovy bubble display

Summer Groovy

Summer Groovy is a chunky bubble display in pink and yellow on white: fat rounded letters with swelling strokes, alternating heights that wave across the line, sparkle accents between words, and a green pill badge beneath, so the plate reads as a seventies poster rather than a modern sans.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Summer Groovy.

Two words are stacked and the drawing is a groovy display: the strokes swell through the middle of every letter, the counters are small and round, and the baseline rises and falls across the word, which is what produces the wave. Each letter is filled flat, one line in pink and one in yellow, with no outline, so the shapes carry the character. Small four-point sparkles sit in the gaps between letters, which reinforces the period reference and keeps the eye moving. Because the strokes are fat and the counters small, the face works at display sizes only, and the specimen sets both lines large with a pill badge beneath in a contrasting green. The plate is otherwise empty white, which is honest for a display face that has nothing to say at paragraph size.

Practical applications

Project & layout
blueprints.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Summer Groovy’s stroke geometry.

Summer

Poster for a summer market

A groovy bubble face sets a summer tone instantly, and the fat strokes read from across a street where a lighter display would need a second colour to attract attention.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A2 portrait: the headline at 120 mm cap height, the stalls in a 14 mm rounded sans, and the dates at 18 mm. Keep 30 mm margins, use two flat colours, and place the sparkles away from the small type.

Pre-production check

Check the poster at five metres, where small counters can close; keep the counters above 8 mm at final size. Confirm the 14 mm stalls read at two metres and that the sparkles do not touch the letterforms.

Birthday

Banner for a seventies party

A groovy display carries the decade without a costume, and the fat letters hold on fabric where a thin novelty face would lose its shape.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print 800 by 400 mm: the name at 130 mm cap height, the age in a 45 mm rounded sans, and a pill badge with the date. Keep 25 mm margins and print two colours on a white ground so the two lines stay distinct.

Pre-production check

Check the banner at four metres, where a rising baseline can make the name look crooked; align the first and last letter to the same height. Confirm the 45 mm age reads at three metres and that the badge clears the eyelets.

Brand & packaging

Label for a soft drink

A groovy label stands out in a chiller full of clean modern designs, and the fat strokes stay legible at small size where a thin retro script would disappear.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 60 by 90 mm label: the flavour at 18 pt, the volume in a 7 pt sans, and the brand at 8 pt. Keep 5 mm clear inside the die and print two flat colours on a coated stock so the swell of each letter reads.

Pre-production check

Check the 18 pt flavour, where the small counters can fill on a curved can; open the tracking. Confirm the 7 pt volume reads in the chiller and that the label wraps without distorting the letterforms.
