Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Play Your Leaves.

The plate is a character map with a frame, and the arrangement is the useful part: the ornaments are shown at the sizes and in the relationships they would be used in, as corners, dividers and borders around a real title, which is more informative than a grid of isolated glyphs. The drawings are a single fine line with a few solid leaves, so the set reads as a drawn border rather than as clip art, and the fine line sets a moderate size floor. The count badge and the title are product copy. It suits a menu, an invitation and a journal page, and it composes well as a corner set with a divider down the middle of a column.

Practical applications

Project & layout
blueprints.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Play Your Leaves’s stroke geometry.

Winter

Menu for a farm restaurant

A leaf ornament frames a menu, and the fine line keeps a long list readable where a heavier border would crowd the page.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A4 menu: a corner sprig at 30 mm, a divider at 80 mm, the sections at 13 pt, and the items at 10 pt. Keep 18 mm margins and keep the finest line above 0.4 mm.

Pre-production check

Check the 30 mm corner at actual size, where a leaf tip closes; keep it above 0.4 mm. Confirm the 10 pt items read in hand and that the divider clears the column.

Wedding

Invitation for a garden wedding

A leaf set frames an invitation, and the drawn line suits a garden setting better than a printed border rule. It suits a garden setting.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A5 invitation: two corner sprigs at 35 mm, a divider at 70 mm, the names at 26 pt, and the request at 9.5 pt. Keep 24 mm margins and keep the line above 0.4 mm.

Pre-production check

Check the 35 mm corners in letterpress, where a tip can sink; proof the plate first. Confirm the request reads at arm's length and that the ornaments clear the trim.

Birthday

Card for a spring lunch

A leaf ornament decorates a card, and the open sprigs give a small format movement without an illustration. It suits a small format.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A6 card: two sprigs at 22 mm, a divider at 40 mm, the greeting at 24 pt, and the details at 9.5 pt. Keep 14 mm margins and keep the finest line above 0.4 mm.

Pre-production check

Check the 22 mm sprig at home-print resolution, where a leaf closes; keep the line above 0.4 mm. Confirm the details read at arm's length and that the card folds flat.
