Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Onaeru.

Onaeru is an extreme-metal display face whose condensed capitals form a readable skeleton inside a dense outward halo of needle-thin centipede spikes. The spikes grow from the stroke edges rather than sitting behind them, so the letter remains the anchor and the bristles are ornament, which means the word survives if the spikes drop out in reproduction. Stylistic alternates change the density of the bristles, letting a designer tune how loud a logo becomes. Below roughly 25 mm the spikes merge into a grey aura, and at that point the face is decoration rather than text.

Editorial & posters

Grindcore LP sleeve, tour poster and embroidered patch layout

The bristle halo reads at poster distance as a printed mass with a word inside it, which is the visual effect black-metal sleeves are built on. Condensed skeletons stay legible on a small back-cover tracklist where a wider logo face would collapse into an unreadable block.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Sleeve 312 x 312 mm plus 3 mm bleed, logo 150 mm wide, album title 24 pt, credit block 7/9 pt condensed. Poster A2, logo 300 mm wide, date/venue 18/22 pt. Patch 90 x 60 mm, logo 40 mm, 4 mm border.

Pre-production check

At 40 mm on an embroidered patch every spike under 1 mm becomes a stitch run and the halo fills solid. Request a sew-out, and if the gap closes, use the sparser alternate or print the patch rather than embroider it.

Brand & packaging

Streetwear hoodie back print, skate deck graphic and metal-label hangtag

Dense outward bristles reproduce as a graphic silhouette on a dark garment, which is what streetwear buyers respond to, and the condensed core keeps the brand name readable inside the noise. Alternates let a series of garments shift density without redrawing the wordmark.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Hoodie print 320 x 400 mm, name 140 mm wide, 40 mm margins, one colour. Deck 210 x 810 mm, graphic 150 mm wide on a 200 mm centre panel. Hangtag 60 x 120 mm, name 22 mm, 5 mm hole clearance.

Pre-production check

A one-colour screen print on a black hoodie will bridge the gaps between spikes under 0.5 mm. Check the alternate with the widest spacing, hold the mesh count at 110 or above, and test a washed sample for bridging before the run.

Halloween

Haunted-attraction poster, scare-zone wayfinding and event wristband

Needle-sharp bristles carry menace at a distance without a single illustration, which keeps a scare attraction's print cheap to produce. The readable core means a guest can still find the zone name while the silhouette does the scaring.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Poster A2, name 220 mm wide, warning copy 12/16 pt, 20 mm margins. Wayfinding board 600 x 300 mm, zone 90 mm, arrow 60 mm, 40 mm margins. Wristband 250 x 25 mm print area, name 7 mm, 3 mm fold clearance.

Pre-production check

Outdoor wayfinding boards are laminated and viewed through rain; thin spikes under 0.36 mm disappear in the lamination sheen. Print a 1:1 sample on the actual board stock and check it at twenty metres in daylight before the season opens.
