Cross-stitch display

New Year

New Year is a cross-stitch display in cream on deep red felt: every stroke is built from small X stitches on a counted grid, the curves are stepped, and the letterforms stay squared so the word reads as embroidery rather than as type.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of New Year.

The two words are set as one line across the middle of the page, and the construction is literal: each stem is a column of coloured crosses, each curve is a staircase of crosses, and the counters are formed by leaving grid squares empty, so the face sits directly on the fabric. Because the grid is fixed, no diagonal is smooth, and the M and the W read as stacked steps while the O becomes a rounded octagon. Stitch size is uniform across the word, which is what makes the face convincing as a pattern, and the letterspacing follows the same module, so the gaps between letters are one or two crosses wide. The ground is a red felt-like surface with stars, two embroidered Christmas trees at the corners and a stitched caption, so the whole page reads as a pattern photograph rather than a type sample.

Practical applications

Project & layout

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to New Year’s stroke geometry.

Cover for a cross-stitch pattern booklet

A counted cross-stitch face ties a pattern booklet to what is inside it, and the grid construction means the cover can be counted and copied by a stitcher.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print an A5 booklet cover: the title at 40 stitches wide, the subtitle in a smaller stitch cut beneath, and a stitched border eight squares from the edge. Keep every element on the same square module so the cover reads as a chart.

Pre-production check

Check the grid at print size, where a fractional stitch makes the letters look blurred; snap all art to whole squares. Confirm the border is countable at 2 mm per stitch and that the subtitle remains legible at the smallest stitch size.

Gift tag for a handmade present

A stitched face makes a printed tag look hand-embroidered, which suits a homemade gift, and the squared letters cut cleanly even on a small tag.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 50 by 90 mm tag: the phrase at 18 stitches wide, a stitched star beneath, and a 3 mm hole reinforcement at the top. Keep the stitch module at least 1.5 mm so the crosses are visible on card stock.

Pre-production check

Check the tag at actual size, where a 1 mm stitch closes into a solid block; enlarge the module. Confirm the hole clears the design and that the phrase still reads when the tag hangs on a ribbon.

Brand & packaging

Label for a festive preserve

A cross-stitch label signals a handmade, seasonal product, and the one-colour construction keeps it printable on a small jam jar.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 55 mm round label: the word at 14 stitches wide, the flavour in a 7 pt sans beneath, and a stitched rule at the base. Keep 4 mm of clear label inside the die and print cream on a dark red stock.

Pre-production check

Check the 55 mm label at actual size, where the crosses need at least 1.2 mm each to read as stitches. Confirm the 7 pt flavour line stays legible on the curved jar and that the stitched rule does not touch the die line.
