Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Inline Heritage - Art Deco.

Inline Heritage is a nineteen-twenties Art Deco architectural display serif drawn as an open inline: tall narrow caps, a fine channel running down each stem, stepped shoulders and a strict geometric base with sharp unbracketed feet. The channel is the whole design and it closes first at small sizes, and the tall proportion stacks a long word vertically. It needs roughly 32 mm for the channel to stay open, and it is best in one deep ink on cream, or a metallic ink on deep green where the channel prints as a bright line.

Practical applications

Project & layout
blueprints.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Inline Heritage - Art Deco’s stroke geometry.

Wedding

Invitation, menu and table plan

A Deco open-inline serif gives a wedding the geometry of an engraved plate rather than a script, which is what a couple wanting restraint will choose. The channel holds at 28 pt on an invitation, and one ink on smooth cream prints the suite in one order.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Invitation 130 x 180 mm, names 28 pt with 8 mm channel clearance, details 9/13 pt, 15 mm margins. Menu 120 x 210 mm, header 16 pt, courses 9/12 pt. Table plan 400 x 600 mm, names 11 mm, 20 mm margins.

Pre-production check

An 11 mm table-plan name closes the channel and the names read as solid bars at a distance. Raise the plan to 15 mm or use the filled cut, and proof one plan before the set.

Birthday

Deco-party invite, cake topper and banner

An Art Deco display sets a twenties-themed birthday without a costume, because the lettering does the era. The channel reads at 40 mm on an invite, and one metallic ink prints the invite and the banner from one file.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Invite A6, word 40 mm with 8 mm channel clearance, details 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Topper 130 x 110 mm, word 44 mm with a 6 mm stick slot and 12 mm clear. Banner 1500 x 400 mm, word 150 mm, 30 mm safe edge.

Pre-production check

A 130 mm laser-cut topper drops the channel island under 1 mm and it falls out. Cut toppers from the filled cut, and test one before the party.

Brand & packaging

Cocktail-bar identity, door plate and menu cover

A Deco open-inline reads as a brass plate rather than a modern logo, which is what a cocktail bar wants at its entrance. The channel gives the name a lit keyline at 50 mm, and one metallic ink prints the plate and the cover in one order.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Door plate 300 x 120 mm, word 50 mm with 8 mm channel clearance, 15 mm margins. Menu cover 150 x 230 mm, title 36 pt, 15 mm margins. Coaster 95 mm round, word 10 mm, 4 mm die margin.

Pre-production check

A 95 mm coaster at 10 mm closes the channel and the word becomes a solid slab. Use a single letter on the coaster, and print one before the batch.
