Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Hackd.

Hackd is a sharp geometric sans in caps whose crossbars link into neighbouring letters, with 45-degree chamfers and crisp stencil breaks slicing the C, K and D, so a word reads as a circuit routed across a panel. The stencil gaps are functional: they let the face paint on awkward surfaces, but they also mean the letters must be large enough for the gaps to stay open. It needs roughly 30 mm before the chamfers read as machined, and it is best in electric violet or white on a dark ground.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Hackd’s stroke geometry.

Brand & packaging

Tech-pack carton, cable-wrap label and conference badge

Circuit-linked caps read as a hardware interface, which is what a networking brand prints on a carton. The stencil breaks let the mark be sprayed or pad-printed onto a case as well as printed on board, and the fused crossbar makes a short product code look like one routed line.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Carton 200 x 150 x 80 mm, word 40 mm on the lid, 20 mm margins. Label 60 x 90 mm, word 14 mm, 4 mm die margin. Badge 100 x 140 mm, word 9 mm, name 8 mm, 8 mm margins.

Pre-production check

A pad print on a moulded case bleeds the 0.4 mm stencil gaps closed and the mark reads as a plain block. Specify 0.8 mm gaps for pad printing, and check one pad-printed sample before the case order.

Editorial & posters

Security report cover, data spread and conference programme

Routed geometry reads as a technical report rather than a marketing piece, which suits an infrastructure or security publication. The linked bars hold a product name in one line at cover width, and the stencil gaps keep small white areas from muddying at 9 pt in a data table.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Cover 210 x 297 mm, title 84 pt, subtitle 12/16 pt, 18 mm margins and 10 mm trim. Spread 420 x 297 mm, headline 90 mm, tables 8/11 pt on a 14 pt row pitch. Programme A5, session 9 pt, time 7 pt.

Pre-production check

Data tables set in a stencil face lose the gap at 8 pt on a laser printer and the digits close into blobs. Keep this face for headlines above 18 pt, and check one printed table page before the run.

Winter

Winter hackathon banner, lanyard and trophy plate

Chamfered circuit letterforms read as a build weekend, which is what a winter hackathon prints on a stage banner. The face holds in one ink on black drape, and the stencil gaps survive cheap vinyl cutting where a hairlined techno face would not.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Banner 3000 x 800 mm, word 420 mm, 200 mm margins and eyelets every 600 mm with 60 mm clear. Lanyard 20 x 400 mm, word 10 mm on a 40 mm pitch. Plate 120 x 40 mm, word 9 mm with 3 mm engraving margin.

Pre-production check

A vinyl-cut banner with 0.8 mm stencil bridges loses small bridges during weeding and the C becomes a broken crescent. Keep 1.5 mm bridges for cut vinyl, and check one weeded panel before the stage run.
