Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Alerigue.

Alerigue is a flamboyant couture serif in which the swashes coil back over the word: thin hairlines loop above and below the caps, the stress is high and the serifs finish in fine curled points. The coils overlap neighbouring letters, so a word is one drawing rather than a sequence, and the hairlines are the first thing to fail in print. It needs roughly 40 mm for the coil and the fine point to read, and it is best in one dense ink on matte white, or foil above 60 pt where the coil edge can carry.

Brand & packaging

Couture label, lookbook cover and box sleeve

A coiled couture serif reads as a fashion-house mark rather than a retail logo, which is what a small atelier wants on a sleeve. The coils give the name its flourish at 40 mm, and one dense ink on matte stock keeps the hairlines from breaking where a coated sheet would glare them out.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Box sleeve 220 x 80 mm, word 40 mm with 10 mm coil clearance, 10 mm margins. Lookbook cover 210 x 297 mm, word 60 mm, 18 mm margins. Label 60 x 40 mm, word 14 mm, 4 mm die margin.

Pre-production check

On a 60 x 40 mm label at 14 mm the coils merge into a knot and the name reads as a flourish rather than a word. Keep labels at 24 mm or use the plain cut, and print one label before the run.

Editorial & posters

Fashion cover, feature opener and folio mark

A coiled couture serif gives a fashion cover the drawn quality of a masthead rather than a headline, which is what a designer feature wants. The overlapping coils fill a 210 mm cover width at 96 pt, and the fine points hold against a pale photograph where a heavy display would fight the image.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Cover 210 x 297 mm, masthead 96 pt with 14 mm coil clearance, cover lines 11/15 pt, 18 mm margins and 10 mm trim. Feature opener 60 pt with 12 mm coil clearance. Folio mark 12 mm, 8 mm from the trim edge.

Pre-production check

At 60 pt on the opener the coils of the first and last letter run into the standfirst and the two lines read as one tangle. Allow 14 mm clearance and set the standfirst after the coil ends, then proof one spread.

Valentine

Love card, scent-blotter and ribbon band

A coiled serif reads as a couture valentine rather than a heart-covered card, which is what a fashion-minded sender wants. The coils give the greeting its one flourish at 34 mm, and one warm ink on matte card keeps the hairline coils open at small sizes.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Card A6, word 34 mm with 10 mm coil clearance, note 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Blotter 60 x 120 mm, word 16 mm, 6 mm margins. Ribbon band 200 x 30 mm, word 9 mm, 5 mm margins.

Pre-production check

On a 60 x 120 mm blotter at 16 mm the hairlines drop out on the absorbent stock and the word prints as a ghost. Use a smooth card for the blotter or raise the word to 22 mm, and print one blotter before the batch.
