Visual anatomy & craft review
Corvethorne is a raven-gothic ornamental blackletter with diamond counter flourishes: dense broken strokes, a heavy vertical rhythm, diamond shapes cut into the counters and hairline thorns that grow off the serifs. The diamonds close first and the thorns vanish on textured stock. It needs roughly 34 mm for the diamond and the thorn to read, and it is best in one dense black on cream, or a single dark ink with a hairline in reverse on a dark ground where the thorns only survive at large sizes.

An ornamental blackletter reads as a printed gothic page rather than a modern headline, which is what a dark-fiction feature wants at the top. The diamonds hold at 64 pt, and one dense black keeps the thorns crisp on an uncoated page.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Opener 210 x 297 mm, title 64 pt with 10 mm thorn clearance, standfirst 11/15 pt, body 9/13 pt, 18 mm margins. Drop cap 96 pt over three lines. Section head 24 pt.
Pre-production check
At 24 pt on the section head the counter diamonds fill and the head reads as a black bar. Keep the face at 40 pt and above, and proof one spread at 1:1.
An ornamental blackletter reads as a period invitation rather than a cartoon monster, which is what a themed evening wants at the door. The thorns hold at 28 mm, and one ink prints the invitation, the labels and the plate in one order.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Invitation 105 x 148 mm, word 28 mm with 10 mm thorn clearance, details 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Candle label 60 x 40 mm, word 10 mm, 3 mm margins. Door plate 200 x 300 mm, word 60 mm, 20 mm margins.
Pre-production check
A 60 x 40 mm candle label at 10 mm closes the thorns into a solid bar and the name is unreadable by candlelight. Raise the label to 16 mm, and check one label in the actual light.
A gothic blackletter reads as a hand-set imprint rather than a modern logo, which is what a bookbinder wants on a plate. The diamonds hold at 22 mm in foil, and one impression covers the plate and the spine.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Bookplate 90 x 60 mm, word 18 mm with 6 mm thorn clearance, 6 mm margins. Spine stamp 12 mm wide, word 6 mm. Foil block 40 x 20 mm, word 10 mm, 3 mm margin.
Pre-production check
A 40 x 20 mm foil block at 10 mm bridges the counter diamonds and the mark prints as a filled shape. Keep foil blocks at 14 mm and above, and test one impression before the order.
