Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Changes Together.

Changes Together is a wide fantasy-gaming serif whose capitals bridge extended horizontal crossbars into their neighbours and carry a carved star inside the O, so a title reads as an engraved game logo rather than a book heading. The crossbars are structural: the letters have to touch, which means tracking is fixed and the word behaves like one plate. The flared wedge serifs give the strokes their fantasy weight. It needs roughly 35 mm for the star and the bars to stay open, and it is at its best in a metallic or two-tone fill on a dark ground.

Editorial & posters

Fantasy novel cover, RPG rulebook and chapter opener

Bridged bars and carved stars read as a genre title, which is what a fantasy publisher puts on a spine and cover. The connected word holds a long series name on one line at cover width, and the wedge serifs survive a coated-stock offset run without a gradient or an illustration behind them.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Cover 152 x 229 mm, title 62 pt on one line, author 14 pt, 18 mm margins and 10 mm trim. Rulebook 210 x 280 mm, part title 48 pt, body 9.5/14 pt in two columns of 82 mm. Opener 420 x 297 mm, chapter 90 mm, 15 mm margins.

Pre-production check

The bridged bars need the letters to touch, so a 0.6 mm letter-space adjustment made by a printer to fit the cover fills the gaps and the title reads as a solid ribbon. Supply the cover as outlined art at final size and confirm no auto-tracking.

Brand & packaging

Game-studio identity, key-art plate and collector tin

Carved stars and fused crossbars read as a studio mark taken from a title sequence, which is what a small game studio wants on a tin and a key-art plate. The single-plate construction keeps a long studio name inside a narrow tin band, and a metallic on dark board gives the engraving look without a second artwork.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Tin 180 x 120 x 60 mm, name 26 mm on the front band, 12 mm margins and 6 mm clear of the rolled seam. Key-art plate 1200 x 800 mm, word 220 mm, 60 mm margins. Card 85 x 55 mm, name 9 mm, 5 mm margins.

Pre-production check

A rolled tin seam curves the front band and a fused word bows with it, so the bars on the ends lift. Keep the name within the flat 140 mm centre, and check one tin assembled before the print run.

Halloween

Dark-fantasy event poster, ticket and costume-shop sign

Engraved fantasy lettering reads as a themed attraction, which is what an October immersive event sells at the door. The star inside the O gives the ticket a crest without a second graphic, and the fused bars hold at poster distance in one ink on a dark sheet.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Poster A2, title 240 mm, dates 22/28 pt, 30 mm margins and 20 mm trim. Ticket 70 x 180 mm, title 18 mm, seat 7 pt, 8 mm margins. Sign 600 x 900 mm, word 110 mm, 50 mm margins and 30 mm frame clearance.

Pre-production check

A dark poster printed in one pass on uncoated stock shows the bars as uneven grey. Print a 100 percent black with a 40 percent underlay or use two passes, and inspect one poster on the actual stock before the batch.
