Fine grain and micro-texture excel in 300 DPI print, sublimation, and screen print rather than small vinyl weeding.
Visual anatomy & craft review
Chalkboard is a hand-drawn chalk family: a rough grainy stroke, slightly uneven letters, a small double-line or shadow variant and a doodle companion for arrows, stars and underlines. The grain is stippled into the stroke, so it prints as texture only above a certain size, and the doodles are drawn to the same weight. It needs roughly 26 mm for the chalk grain to read, and it is best as white or a single bright colour on a dark board, or the reverse printed as white ink on black card.

A chalk family is the lettering already on a classroom board, so a printed display in it looks drawn by the teacher rather than bought. The grain holds at 80 mm on a wall, and the doodle companion supplies arrows and underlines without a second artwork file.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Display 900 x 600 mm, header 90 mm with 10 mm grain clearance, names 40 mm, 30 mm margins. Timetable 600 x 400 mm, header 40 mm, cells 20 mm. Door sign 200 x 250 mm, word 40 mm, 15 mm margins.
Pre-production check
Printed white on black card at 20 mm the chalk grain fills in and the letters read as solid white blocks. Keep the grain to 60 mm and above, and print one door sign before the class set.
A chalk family gives a birthday a hand-made board rather than a printed banner, which is what a garden party wants at the gate. The doodle arrows point to the food table at 40 mm, and one white ink on black card prints the board, the labels and the backdrop sign together.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Welcome board 600 x 900 mm, word 80 mm with 10 mm grain clearance, 30 mm margins. Food label 105 x 75 mm, item 16 mm, 6 mm margins. Backdrop sign 900 x 600 mm, word 90 mm, 25 mm margins.
Pre-production check
A 105 x 75 mm food label at 16 mm turns the chalk grain into dirty speckle and the item name looks stained. Raise labels to 22 mm, and print one label before the party.
A chalk family reads as a board written that morning, which is what a café wants when the autumn menu changes weekly. The uneven letters hold at 40 mm behind glass, and the doodle stars mark the new items without a second print run.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Menu board 900 x 1200 mm, header 100 mm, items 40 mm, prices 34 mm, 40 mm margins. Window decal 600 x 200 mm, word 80 mm, 20 mm edge clearance. Sleeve 240 x 90 mm, word 22 mm, 12 mm from the seam.
Pre-production check
Behind glass the white chalk at 34 mm picks up reflection and the prices disappear from a metre away. Raise prices to 40 mm and keep them off the reflective band, and read one board through the actual window before the run.
