Visual anatomy & craft review
American Western is a clean Wide-West saloon slab serif: extended unbracketed slabs, a heavy even stem, a small medial spur on some letters and a wide stance that reads as a painted board rather than a display face. The width makes a word long, and the clean slabs mean it survives one-colour print without losing detail. It needs roughly 28 mm for the slab and the spur to read, and it is best in one warm black or oxblood on sand and cream, or a single white on a dark board where the slabs print as clean bars.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to American Western’s stroke geometry.
A Wide-West slab reads as a painted rodeo board rather than a modern flyer, which is what a summer event wants on its gate. The extended slabs hold at 130 mm, and one warm ink prints the poster, the gate sign and the tickets in a single order.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Poster A2, word 130 mm with 12 mm slab clearance, details 36 mm, 20 mm margins. Gate sign 1200 x 600 mm, word 180 mm, 40 mm margins. Ticket 100 x 50 mm, word 12 mm, 4 mm perforation.
Pre-production check
A 100 x 50 mm ticket at 12 mm closes the spur notch and the word prints as a plain slab bar. Keep tickets at 18 mm and above, and check one ticket before the batch.
A saloon slab gives a guest ranch a welcome that reads as painted rather than printed, which is what a working ranch wants at the gate. The wide stems hold at 80 mm on a sign, and one ink prints the card and the crate label in the same order.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Sign 900 x 400 mm, word 120 mm with 12 mm slab clearance, 25 mm margins. Card A6, greeting 18 mm, note 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Crate label 120 x 80 mm, word 24 mm, 8 mm margins.
Pre-production check
On a 120 x 80 mm crate label at 24 mm the wide slabs run into the die edge and the cut clips a serif. Keep the word inside an 8 mm die margin, and cut one label from the actual dieline before the batch.
A wide Western slab reads as a printed harvest bill rather than a social post, which is what an autumn rodeo wants on a fence. The heavy stems hold at 150 mm across a banner, and one oxblood ink prints the poster, the banner and the prize cards.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Banner 2000 x 600 mm, word 160 mm with 15 mm slab clearance, 40 mm safe edge. Prize card 100 x 70 mm, word 22 mm, 6 mm margins. Poster A2, word 130 mm, details 34 mm, 20 mm margins.
Pre-production check
A 100 x 70 mm prize card at 22 mm leaves the slab serifs touching at the ends and the word reads as a solid rule. Raise the card word to 28 mm, and print one card before the event.
