Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Baseball Western.

Baseball Western is a woodblock serif built from spurred saloon lettering: bracketed slab slabs, a heavy vertical stress, sharp spur points on the E, G and J, and a small internal shadow line that mimics a carved block. The spurs break the silhouette outward, so the artwork box grows at every word. It needs roughly 34 mm for the spur and the shadow line to read, and it is best in warm black or oxblood on sand and raw board.

Brand & packaging

Rodeo-bar identity, enamel sign and coaster set

A spurred woodblock serif is the lettering a Western bar already uses on its facade, so the identity and the small print come from one face. The carved shadow gives the sign depth at 90 mm, and one ink holds the whole set on enamel white where the spurs stay crisp against the ground.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Enamel sign 600 x 400 mm, word 90 mm with 12 mm spur clearance, 30 mm margins. Coaster 95 mm round, word 12 mm, 5 mm die margin. Menu cover 150 x 230 mm, title 40 pt, 15 mm margins. Card 85 x 55 mm, word 14 mm, 5 mm margins.

Pre-production check

A 95 mm coaster at 12 mm closes the carved shadow line into one solid stroke and the word reads as a plain slab. Keep coasters to a single letter or raise the word to 18 mm, and print one coaster before the batch.

Autumn

Harvest-fair poster, barn sign and sack print

A Western woodblock serif reads as a painted barn advertisement, which is exactly what an autumn fair wants on its poster. The spurs carry the word across a field at 200 mm, and the heavy stress keeps the letters solid through a single screen on kraft without a second colour.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Poster A2, headline 150 mm with 18 mm spur clearance, dates 36 mm, 20 mm margins. Barn sign 1500 x 900 mm, word 300 mm, 50 mm edge clearance. Sack print 300 x 400 mm, word 90 mm, 25 mm margins.

Pre-production check

On kraft the oxblood ink wicks along the paper fibres and the 1 mm spur tips bleed into the ground. Print sacks on coated stock or widen the spur to 2 mm, and check one stamped sack on the real paper before the batch.

Editorial & posters

Feature opener, drop cap and section rule

A spurred slab reads as a newspaper feature title rather than a modern headline, which suits a story about land, sport or small-town business. The woodblock shadow gives the opener weight at 64 pt, and the square slab serifs sit on a strict baseline grid so the title aligns with the columns below.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Opener 210 x 297 mm, title 64 pt with 8 mm spur clearance, standfirst 11/15 pt, body 9/13 pt in two columns, 18 mm margins. Drop cap 3 lines. Section rule 120 mm wide.

Pre-production check

At 11 pt the standfirst keeps the spur but loses the carved shadow, so the line greys out beside a 9 pt serif body. Keep display use at 40 pt and above, and proof one spread at 1:1 before the run.
