Tuscan western slab display

Western Forge

Western Forge is a tuscan western slab in dark brown on tan: bifurcated serifs, spurred stems, a notched crossbar on the F, and heavy bracketed slabs, set against a desert scene with a low sun, mountains and a rider, so the pair reads as a wood-type poster.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Western Forge.

The two words are stacked and the drawing is a tuscan slab: the serifs split into points, the stems carry small spurs, and the letters are wide and heavy, which gives the word the weight of a printed wood block. The ornament is part of the skeleton rather than an overlay, so the counters stay open and the face holds at a distance. Spacing is even and tight, and the two lines are set to the same width so the block reads as a poster plate. The ground is a full western scene in two tones: a sun disc, layered mountains, a rider and cacti, all drawn flat, which sets the face in the world it belongs to. Two tracked lines, above and below, are set in the same slab at small size, and they read because the tuscan detail is small enough to stay legible.

Project & layout

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Western Forge’s stroke geometry.

Brand & packaging

Sign for a steakhouse

A tuscan slab reads as a wood-type sign and holds up at the size a restaurant fascia needs, and the built-in ornament means the sign works without a logo above it.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Paint a 2,000 by 600 mm fascia: the name at 250 mm cap height, the tagline in a 40 mm slab, and a 10 mm rule. Keep 60 mm margins so the spurred serifs have room and paint two colours on a dark board.

Pre-production check

Check the fascia at forty metres, where a bifurcated serif can read as damage; keep the split above 15 mm. Confirm the 40 mm tagline reads at six metres and that the serifs do not touch the rule.

Editorial & posters

Cover for a frontier history

A tuscan slab frames a history as a printed artifact of its period, and the flat two-tone rendering lets a cover carry a whole landscape without a photograph.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the title at 90 mm cap height across 230 mm, the subtitle in a 12 pt slab, and the author at 9 pt caps. Print two inks on an aged stock and let the illustrated landscape run to the trim beneath the title.

Pre-production check

Check the title at thumbnail size, where the spurs can blur; keep the darker ink for the title. Confirm the 9 pt author survives the matte lamination and that the title clears the illustration by 10 mm.

Birthday

Invitation for a cowboy party

A western slab sets the theme without a costume reference, and the flat shapes mean the invitation prints at home in two colours without losing the tuscan detail.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A6 card: the phrase at 30 pt, the details in a 9 pt slab, and a 4 mm border. Keep 12 mm margins and print two flat colours on a tan card so the serifs read as printed rather than as texture.

Pre-production check

Check the 30 pt phrase on a tan card, where the bifurcated serifs can close; keep the size above 26 pt. Confirm the 9 pt details keep a 4.5:1 contrast and that the border does not crowd the spurs.
