Quirky handwritten caps with irregular widths

Sunday

Sunday is a quirky handwritten face in black on white: bold monoline capitals with irregular widths, odd joins where the strokes meet, and letters that lean against each other, shown over pale pink doodles of rainbows, stars and squiggles.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Sunday.

The word fills the frame on one line, and the face is a handwritten capital alphabet with a deliberate quirk: the N is drawn with a stroke that overshoots, the D keeps a corner instead of a curve, the A carries a low crossbar, and the Y has one arm shorter than the other, while the letters vary in width and lean slightly against one another. The stroke is even and bold, closer to a marker than a pen, and there is no contrast, so the word reads as a solid line of ink at a distance. The quirks are consistent, which is what makes them look intended rather than careless, and the letters remain readable because the underlying shapes are standard. Behind the block a pale pink field of doodles, rainbows, dots, stars and squiggles sits at very low contrast, and a tracked capital line names the style at the foot. Sunday is a handwritten face for cards, notes, packaging and social graphics, and it needs short phrases at a large size.

Editorial & posters

Heading for a weekend feature

A bold quirky hand gives a lifestyle heading personality without the polish of a script, and the even stroke keeps a short line readable at page size.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 210 by 280 mm page: set the heading at 40 pt on one line, keep 16 mm of clear ground beneath before the standfirst at 11 pt, and hold 20 mm of margin on all four sides.

Pre-production check

One oversized stroke in a heading can look like a mistake; proof one page and check the quirks read as intended.

Classroom & school

Cover for a class project

A bold hand lets a child's project cover look made rather than printed, and the capitals stay legible at the size of a title.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print an A4 cover at 210 by 297 mm: set the title at 44 pt over two lines, keep 20 mm of clear ground beneath before the name at 14 pt, and hold 18 mm of margin on all four sides.

Pre-production check

A quirky face at forty-four points can look messy from a distance; print one cover and check it across the room.

Birthday

Banner for a relaxed party

A bold hand suits a gathering that is informal, and the solid weight carries across a room without needing an outline around it.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 700 by 300 mm banner: set the greeting at 100 pt over two lines, keep 26 mm of clear ground beneath before the time at 24 pt, and hold 22 mm of border on all four sides.

Pre-production check

A handwritten face on a large banner can look stretched; proof one section at final size before the run.
