Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Spooky Halloween.

Spooky Halloween is a large horror alphabet in which letters melt: stems sag into drips, the counters stretch into ooze and small witch hats and castle silhouettes replace dots and terminals across a set of more than two hundred glyphs. The drips extend below the baseline, so the word box grows downward and needs clearance underneath. It needs roughly 34 mm for the drips and the ornament glyphs to read, and it is best in acid green or blood red on black, with the drips kept as a single flat colour.

Practical applications

Project & layout

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Spooky Halloween’s stroke geometry.

Halloween

Fright-night poster, sweet-bag label and door banner

A melting horror alphabet reads as a poster painted for one night rather than a seasonal template, which is what a house party wants on its front door. The drips and the ornament glyphs give a short word menace at 120 mm, and one acid ink on black prints the poster, the bag label and the banner in one pass.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Poster A2, word 120 mm with 20 mm drip clearance, times 40 mm, 20 mm margins. Bag label 80 x 50 mm, word 14 mm, 4 mm margins. Door banner 500 x 900 mm, word 120 mm, 30 mm margins.

Pre-production check

A 80 x 50 mm bag label at 14 mm collapses the drips into a solid edge and the word reads as a smear. Keep labels at 20 mm and above, and print one label before the batch.

Birthday

Spooky birthday invite, cake topper and cup wrap

A melting alphabet gives a Halloween birthday its joke without a licensed character, and the ornament glyphs supply the theme in the lettering itself. The sagging stems hold at 36 mm on an invite, and one ink prints the invite, the topper and the wrap on plain white stock for a home party.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Invite A6, word 36 mm with 10 mm drip clearance, details 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Topper 120 x 110 mm, word 40 mm with a 6 mm stick slot and 12 mm clear. Cup wrap 200 x 90 mm, word 20 mm, 12 mm from the rim.

Pre-production check

A laser-cut topper drops the drip tips under 1 mm and they snap off before the cake. Cut the topper to the silhouette without drips, and test one topper on a stick before the set.

Editorial & posters

Horror-feature opener, pull quote and spine mark

A melting display with ornament glyphs turns a horror feature title into an illustration, which is what a Halloween issue wants at the opener. The sagging letters give the title movement at 72 pt, and the witch-hat glyph supplies the ornament so no extra drawing is needed on the page.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Opener 210 x 297 mm, title 72 pt with 12 mm drip clearance, standfirst 11/15 pt, body 9/13 pt, 18 mm margins. Pull quote 44 pt, 10 mm margins. Spine mark 15 mm wide, 12 mm tall.

Pre-production check

At 15 mm on the spine the drips merge into a black block and the mark reads as a smudge on the shelf. Use a single ornament glyph on the spine and keep the face for the opener, then proof one spread at 1:1.
