Modern serif with a dramatic swash ligature

Marquis - Elegant Modern Serif

Marquis is an elegant modern serif in white over a photograph of two people: very high contrast, tall letters with fine serifs, and a long swash that leaves the M and runs beneath the word, with three small pill labels below it.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Marquis - Elegant Modern Serif.

The word runs across the middle of the page on a single line and the face is a modern serif with one large gesture: the stems are heavy, the joins are hairlines, the serifs are fine and flat, the letters are tall and spaced widely, and from the first capital a swash leaves the letter, dips below the baseline and travels under the whole word before turning up at the end. That single flourish does the work an ornament would do on a plainer face, and because it is drawn at hairline weight it reads as a flourish rather than as a second line. Three small pill labels sit beneath the word in a plain sans, and a tracked capital line above introduces the face. The ground is a photograph of two figures walking, in muted greens and greys, which keeps the white type legible without a hard block behind it. Marquis is a serif for editorial titles, invitations, luxury packaging and branding, and it needs a wide measure and a printer who can hold a hairline.

Practical applications

Project & layout

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Marquis - Elegant Modern Serif’s stroke geometry.

Wedding

Names on a formal invitation

A serif with a swash ligature gives two names the flourish of engraved stationery, and the long stroke keeps a wide card from looking empty.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 148 by 210 mm card: set the names at 30 pt on one line, keep 26 mm of clear ground beneath before the details at 8 pt, and hold 16 mm of margin on all four sides.

Pre-production check

The swash runs below the baseline and can clash with the line beneath; set the whole card before proofing.

Editorial & posters

Masthead for a fashion title

A modern serif with a single flourish reads as a designed masthead rather than a borrowed one, and the wide spacing keeps it legible over a photograph.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 230 by 300 mm cover: set the masthead at 110 pt on one line, keep 28 mm of clear ground beneath before the coverlines at 10 pt, and hold 16 mm of margin at the top and sides.

Pre-production check

Hairlines over a photograph can drop out; proof one cover at final size and check the swash along its length.

Brand & packaging

Label for a luxury perfume

A high-contrast serif reads as premium on a small bottle, and the swash gives a short name a mark without a symbol beside it.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 40 by 75 mm bottle label: set the name at 12 pt on one line, keep 4 mm of clear ground beneath before the volume at 3.5 pt, and hold 3 mm of margin on all four sides.

Pre-production check

A hairline swash on a curved label will distort; print one on the real bottle and check the length before the order.
