Thin art deco caps

Lombard

Lombard is a thin art deco display in white over a black-and-white portrait: high-waisted capitals with hairline strokes, an O drawn as a circle, a Q with a long tail and a stepped A, set at a moderate size with tracked notes beneath in red, so the plate reads as a period title card.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Lombard.

The word is set once across the frame and the drawing is deco geometry: the horizontals are hairlines, the verticals are narrow, and the letters close into near-circles and rectangles, which gives the face its period feel. The thin weight means the face needs a large size and a high-contrast ground, and the specimen places it over a monochrome photograph where the white reads as light rather than ink. Spacing is generous, so each letter's geometry is visible, and the small block of red text beneath is set in the same construction at a fraction of the size, which is the one place the plate allows a second colour. The composition is asymmetric, with the portrait at the left and the type at the right, which is how a title card of the period would be laid out.

Project & layout

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Lombard’s stroke geometry.

Brand & packaging

Mark for a cocktail bar

A deco display gives a bar a period identity, and the hairline construction reads at sign size in metal or vinyl where a heavier face would feel modern.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Fabricate a 900 by 300 mm sign: the name at 130 mm cap height, a 5 mm minimum stroke, and the hours in a 20 mm deco sans. Keep 30 mm margins and specify a matte finish so the hairlines do not glare.

Pre-production check

Check the sign at 130 mm, where a 5 mm stroke can flex in fabrication; keep it above 4 mm. Confirm the 20 mm hours read at four metres and that the hairline crossbars hold at night.

Editorial & posters

Cover for a jazz reissue

A deco title reads as a period sleeve, and the hairline letterforms let a cover keep most of its photograph visible behind the type.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the title at 90 mm cap height across a 300 mm sleeve, the artist in a 12 pt deco sans, and the catalogue number at 7 pt. Print white over a monochrome photograph and keep the stepped rule as the only ornament.

Pre-production check

Check the title at sleeve size, where hairlines can break; proof the print. Confirm the 7 pt catalogue number reads on the spine and that the title clears the trim by 8 mm.

Wedding

Menu for a deco wedding

A thin deco face gives a formal menu a period elegance, and the hairline construction keeps the card airy where a heavy serif would fill it.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A5 menu: the heading at 26 pt, the courses at 10 pt with 16 pt leading, and the date at 8 pt. Keep 22 mm margins and print one ink on a cream card so the hairlines read as engraved lines.

Pre-production check

Check the 10 pt courses on an uncoated card, where hairlines can fill; keep them above 0.2 mm. Confirm the heading reads across the table and that the date clears the trim by 10 mm.
