Visual anatomy & craft review
Comic Beacon is a flat-cut comic headline in caps with tapered wedge stems, solid edges and a slight forward slant that fits inside a speech burst. The letterforms are simple and even, so the face reads at 14 mm on a panel and at 200 mm on a cover, and the wedge stems give the classic comic stress without a shadow or an outline. It needs roughly 18 mm for the taper to read, and it is at its best in one flat colour on a bright panel, with a heavy outline supplied by the layout rather than the font.

Flat tapered caps read as hand-lettered comic titling, which is what a small press cover needs without a letterer. The simple forms stay legible when the title is squeezed into a burst.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Cover 170 x 260 mm, title 40 mm, blurb header 12 mm, 15 mm margins. Panel effect 30 mm inside a 60 mm burst. Back cover 12 mm header on a 100 mm measure.
Pre-production check
A title fitted inside a drawn burst gets its corners clipped by the burst outline. Set the burst first, then size the title to leave 4 mm of white inside the points, and check one printed cover.
Comic caps set a party theme in one word, which a child recognises before reading. The flat forms cut cleanly as a topper at 45 mm.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Invite A6, title 18 mm, details 4.5 mm, 10 mm margins. Topper 130 x 110 mm, name 45 mm, 8 mm stick slot. Prop 300 x 200 mm on 5 mm foamex, burst 200 mm.
Pre-production check
A topper pushed into icing can transfer ink from the area nearest the stick. Keep the artwork above the 8 mm slot line, print single-sided, and check one assembled topper before the party.
Comic caps read as an invitation to read rather than an instruction, which is what a class project needs. The face holds at 12 mm on a worksheet title printed on a school copier.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Project cover A4, title 30 mm, name field 12 mm, 20 mm margins. Board header 600 x 150 mm, word 50 mm. Worksheet A4, title 14 mm, instructions 11/16 pt.
Pre-production check
School copiers at 300 dpi thicken a tapered stem and the letters look clumsy. Print one test sheet on the machine in use, and reduce the weight if the tapers blob.
