Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Chardus Ransom.

Chardus Ransom is a clean geometric ransom display built from cut tiles: every letter sits on its own rectangular or circular plate, the plates butt against each other with visible gaps, and the strokes are the same weight as a modern geometric sans. The plate edges are straight and sharp, so a word reads as assembled paper rather than drawn type. It needs roughly 30 mm for the plate gaps to read, and it is best in black on newsprint and bright paper stocks, with one accent plate in red.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Chardus Ransom’s stroke geometry.

Brand & packaging

Punk label identity, tape seal and gig flyer

Cut-tile ransom lettering is the voice a small label uses for its gig flyers, so the identity and the flyer come from one face. The plate gaps read as assembled paper at 40 mm, and one black plus one accent plate prints the whole set on cheap uncoated stock without a second plate.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Flyer A4, word 40 mm with 4 mm plate gaps, listings 9/12 pt, 15 mm margins. Tape seal 60 x 25 mm, word 9 mm, 3 mm margins. Card 85 x 55 mm, word 14 mm, 4 mm margins.

Pre-production check

The plate gaps at 9 mm on a 60 mm tape seal let the die land inside a letter and the seal tears open. Print the seal as a solid block with the letter cut in, and test one roll before the order.

Editorial & posters

Feature title, deck cards and caption tags

A geometric ransom display turns a feature title into an assembled object, which suits an issue about design, protest or self-publishing. The individual plates give the opener a shift in tone at 72 pt, and the equal stroke weight keeps the deck cards coherent beside a modern sans body.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Opener 210 x 297 mm, title 72 pt with 6 mm plate gaps, deck cards 60 x 40 mm with 9 pt text, body 9/13 pt, 18 mm margins. Caption tag 90 x 25 mm, word 8 mm.

Pre-production check

The plates at 8 mm on a caption tag merge into one grey strip at normal reading distance. Keep tags at 12 mm or set the caption in the body sans, and proof one spread at 1:1.

Halloween

Haunted-house poster, ticket stub and sweet-bag seal

Assembled ransom plates read as a homemade threat, which is the right tone for a neighbourhood haunted house. The mismatched plates give the poster menace at 120 mm, and one black plus one blood-red plate prints the poster, the stub and the seal on cheap stock for a single night.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Poster A2, word 120 mm with 8 mm plate gaps, times 40 mm, 20 mm margins. Ticket stub 100 x 50 mm, number 10 mm, 4 mm perforation. Bag seal 70 x 30 mm, word 9 mm, 3 mm margins.

Pre-production check

A 70 x 30 mm seal at 9 mm lets the plate gaps fall under 0.8 mm and the word fills solid. Raise the seal word to 14 mm or use a single tile with the whole word, and check one printed seal before the batch.
